Speaking Part 2 sample

Describe a person who can play an instrument or has musical talents

You should say:

  • Who this person is;
  • How and where you knew this person;
  • Why you think he/she is talented;

And explain how you found out that he/she is talented.

Sample

(Introduction) Have you ever heard of Michael Jackson? I bet you have. Well there is a high chance that you have heard his works before you even know his names.

(Story) In my case, his theme song for Zombie movies caught my attention the first moment I saw the trailer. If you’ve seen the movie, I bet you were too captivated by the menacing soundtrack during the car-chasing scene. It sent chills down my spine and sent me looking up who was the mastermind behind that track.

As It turns out, I am no stranger to Jackson’s works, which include the iconic theme song.

(Opinion) But his talent goes beyond music composition. I bet my bottom dollar that he’s hilarious in person – look at how he names his scores. He’s such a sucker for good pun and so am I. There’s Billy Jeans, Moon Walk, which are lifelong masterpieces.

This is pure genius I tell you. I love it when the artist understands that they are not only making art, they are also telling a story and taking everyone with them on that journey. And Michael Jackson does it with a wink.

(Introduction) As someone who is chronically online, I’ve learned the subtle art of leaving strategic digital footprints so that the algorithm would only suggest intriguing content creators, one of whom is a potter named Kim Jun.

(Story) I believe that it was during the pandemic that I started my transition from Youtube to Tiktok where, surprisingly, there is lots of low-effort, high-quality content. Anyone could go viral as long as they have a certain niche. And that of Kim Jun was her series on making pottery using random molds she got somewhere. So for a couple of months, millions of people and I got front seats to see Kim Jun pouring clay into a mysterious mold and holding our breath as she put it in a kiln.

(Opinion) For the craftsman herself, it must be hours before she could finally retrieve the final products, but for us, it was mere seconds. The thing that struck me the most was the fact that Kim Jun seemed to be always delightful during the reveal when the piece of ceramic is unfolded from the mold. Sometimes, the mystery turned out to be a set of decorative ducks. Other times it made me question the original creators’ artistic choices.

Nonetheless, Kim Jun loved here creatures and continued to paint them with these specific paints for ceramics, the ones that looked red when first applied but would glow blue after being in the fire.

If we’re being honest here, I’m not entirely interested in pottery making. I mean, I enjoy a good piece of ceramics but that’s it.

Speaking Part 3 Sample

Music and musical instruments

1. What would children do when hearing music?

  • A (Answer): Kids may dance or stare blankly.
  • R (Reason): Music stimulates emotions and movement.
  • E (Example): Some toddlers bounce; shy ones just watch.
  • C (Consequence): Music improves rhythm, creativity, and social skills.

It’s a tough question, I mean, I don't have much experience with little kids. But I suppose some might start dancing while others stare blankly because they’re shy.

stare blankly /steə(r) ˈblæŋkli/ phrase nhìn chằm chằm vô hồn, ngơ ngác
stimulate /ˈstɪmjuleɪt/ v kích thích, thúc đẩy
toddler /ˈtɒdlə(r)/ n trẻ lẫm chẫm tập đi (1–3 tuổi)
bounce /baʊns/ v nhún nhảy
rhythm /ˈrɪðəm/ n nhịp điệu

2. What kind of music do children like?

  • A (Answer): Fun and catchy tunes.
  • R (Reason): Kids enjoy playful, upbeat sounds.
  • E (Example): Young ones like nursery rhymes; older ones prefer parodies.
  • C (Consequence) : Music taste evolves with age and influence.

Again, it’s just a shot in the dark here. They probably enjoy something that sounds fun and catchy when they are little. But once they get an ounce of personality, they might turn towards parodies or whatever their older siblings are listening to.

shot in the dark /ʃɒt ɪn ðə dɑːk/ idiom sự đoán mò
catchy /ˈkætʃi/ adj bắt tai, dễ nhớ
an ounce of personality /ən aʊns əv ˌpɜːsəˈnæləti/ phrase một chút nét tính cách riêng

3. Why does the teacher play some music in class?

  • A (Answer): To energize or aid learning.
  • R (Reason): Music boosts focus and mood.
  • E (Example): Mario Kart for tasks, instrumentals for focus.
  • C (Consequence): Helps students stay engaged.

Oh this is my wheelhouse. Music can energize, calm, or even enhance learning, so we would put on tunes like Mario Kart when students are completing a task, or instrumental scores when they need to focus.

my wheelhouse /maɪ ˈwiːlhaʊs/ idiom lĩnh vực sở trường của tôi
energize /ˈenədʒaɪz/ v tiếp năng lượng, làm cho sôi nổi

4. Why is music often played in stores?

  • A (Answer): To influence mood and spending.
  • R (Reason): Music relaxes customers.
  • E (Example): Calm tunes in cafés, upbeat in stores.
  • C (Consequence): Encourages purchases.

Same reason why music is played in elevators and coffee shops. It can manipulate people, putting them in a good mood. And when they’re less tight, they’re likely to loosen their purse strings. Sometimes music can set the tone for the establishment too (pun intended).

loosen one's purse strings /ˈluːsn wʌnz pɜːs strɪŋz/ idiom vung tay quá trán, chi tiêu thoải mái
manipulate /məˈnɪpjuleɪt/ v thao túng, điều khiển

pun intended /pʌn ɪnˈtendɪd/ phrase ý chỉ việc chơi chữ là cố tình

5. How does the store owner know what kind of music is attractive?

  • A (Answer): Through marketing knowledge.
  • R (Reason): Music reflects branding.
  • E (Example): Luxury stores use classical; trendy shops use pop.
  • C (Consequence): Enhances customer experience.

There’s a whole science behind it. Any business owner with some knowledge in marketing would understand the importance of branding and would pick a playlist that represents their brand.

branding /ˈbrændɪŋ/ n việc xây dựng thương hiệu
represent /ˌreprɪˈzent/ v đại diện cho, thể hiện
reflect /rɪˈflekt/ v phản ánh, thể hiện

6. Should children learn musical instruments when they are young?

A (Answer): Yes, if affordable.

R (Reason): Builds discipline and coordination.

E (Example): Guitar or piano teaches patience.

C (Consequence): Fun even without mastery.

If their family can afford it, sure. The act of learning to play the guitar or the piano teaches kids discipline, coordination, and maybe even patience with themselves. But hey, no pressure! Not everyone can become the next Mozart, but everyone can have a good time playing music.

discipline /ˈdɪsəplɪn/ n tính kỷ luật
coordination /kəʊˌɔːdɪˈneɪʃn/ n sự phối hợp (cơ thể/tay mắt)

  • A (Answer): Absolutely.
  • R (Reason): Enhances emotion and tension.
  • E (Example): Jaws foreshadowing, Interstellar climax.
  • C (Consequence): Deepens audience impact.

Is the sky blue? Does The Academy give an award for Best Original Score? I mean, think about the ominous tunes that foreshadow the shark in Jaw. And how the climax of Interstellar is heightened by the composition of Hans Zimmer.

is the sky blue? /ɪz ðə skaɪ bluː/ idiom hiển nhiên là vậy (câu hỏi tu từ)
ominous /ˈɒmɪnəs/ adj điềm xấu, đáng sợ, u ám

  • A (Answer): Provide opportunities.
  • R (Reason): Exposure helps talent emerge.
  • E (Example): Music, art, and drama programs.
  • C (Consequence): Arts should inspire, not pressure.

Opportunities are pivotal. Music programs, art classes, and even drama clubs can help kids discover hidden talents. But I think what’s more important is for them to be entertained. Arts are supposed to heal us, not stress us out.

pivotal /ˈpɪvətl/ adj quan trọng, mang tính quyết định
discover hidden talents /dɪˈskʌvə(r) ˈhɪdn ˈtælənts/ phrase khám phá tài năng ẩn giấu
emerge /ɪˈmɜːdʒ/ v bộc lộ ra, xuất hiện
heal /hiːl/ v chữa lành

  • A (Answer): Both are fascinating.
  • R (Reason): Talent and AI are complex.
  • E (Example): I, Robot symphony scene.
  • C (Consequence): Sparks endless debate.

They’re both fascinating to me, like puzzles I cannot solve. I remember this scene from a Will Smith’s movie called I Robot. The protagonist asked the robot if it could write a symphony, or if it could turn a blank canvas into an artwork. And the robot asked if he could. I keep thinking about it whenever there’s a debate on AI.

fascinating /ˈfæsɪneɪtɪŋ/ adj lôi cuốn, vô cùng thú vị
protagonist /prəˈtæɡənɪst/ n nhân vật chính
blank canvas /blæŋk ˈkænvəs/ phrase tấm vải vẽ trống / khởi đầu chưa có gì

10. Have you ever had any experience with things related to Al?

  • A (Answer): Yes, through social media.
  • R (Reason): AI generates online content.
  • E (Example): Posts about cats vs. capitalism.
  • C (Consequence): AI shapes digital culture.

Well, I have a phone with an internet connection, so I only have to open a random social media app and there would be countless posts created by AI. My favorite is stories of cats overcoming a life of capitalism.

countless /ˈkaʊntləs/ adj vô số, không đếm xuyết
capitalism /ˈkæpɪtəlɪzəm/ n chủ nghĩa tư bản
overcome /ˌəʊvəˈkʌm/ v vượt qua

11. Do you think Ai will replace human beings?

  • A (Answer): Maybe, in the workforce.
  • R (Reason): AI reduces risky labor.
  • E (Example): Robots in construction.
  • C (Consequence): More time for art and growth.

I know it sounds crazy, but I hope it will replace humans in the workforce. Think about heavy labor like construction – With robots layering bricks on scaffolding, the risks against humans would be next to zero. We would have the time to make art, to build relationships, and to just work on ourselves in general.

workforce /ˈwɜːkfɔːs/ n lực lượng lao động
heavy labor /ˈhevi ˈleɪbə(r)/ phrase lao động nặng nhọc
scaffolding /ˈskæfəldɪŋ/ n giàn giáo (xây dựng)

work on oneself /wɜːk ɒn wʌnˈself/ phrase rèn luyện / phát triển bản thân

Traditional handicrafts

1. How does modern technology change the handicraft industry?

  • A (Answer): Technology boosts mass production but lowers craftsmanship.
  • R (Reason): It increases output, causing product uniformity.
  • E (Example): Handcrafted items are replaced by machine-made ones.
  • C (Consequence): Unique craftsmanship loses value.

Well, ever since the industrial revolution, mass production has been ever-increasingly prominent. As a result, productivity has been skyrocketing. But this also means a rampant homogenization of products and an eroding craftsmanship across many industries.

mass production /mæs prəˈdʌkʃn/ phrase sự sản xuất hàng loạt
skyrocketing /ˈskaɪˌrɒkɪtɪŋ/ adj tăng vọt, tăng nhanh chóng
rampant /ˈræmpənt/ adj lan tràn, không kiểm soát được

erode /ɪˈrəʊd/ v mài mòn, làm suy yếu dần

2. Is it reasonable to charge a high price for handmade things?

  • A (Answer): Yes, high prices are fair.
  • R (Reason): They cover time, skill, and materials.
  • E (Example): A skilled potter's work costs more due to expertise.
  • C (Consequence): The price reflects quality.

It is, in most cases. The way I see it, a steep price is justified by the plethora of investments that one must put into a creation. Say, the time spent on honing one’s skills, the money paid for materials, and of course, the demand of the market.

steep price /stiːp praɪs/ phrase giá đắt đỏ, giá chát
justified /ˈdʒʌstɪfaɪd/ adj hợp lý, có lý do chính đáng
plethora /ˈpleθərə/ n sự rất nhiều, vô số

3. Are there any traditional handicrafts in your hometown?

  • A (Answer): My hometown is known for wool clothing.
  • R (Reason): The first factory sparked interest in knitting.
  • E (Example): Wool production became popular 70 years ago.
  • C (Consequence): Knitting and crocheting became a local tradition.

Technically, it is not traditional, but we do pride ourselves on our production of clothing, specifically anything wool. You see, some seventy years ago, one of the first factories in my country was established here so the whole town became industrial workers or started to learn how to knit and crochet.

pride oneself on sth /praɪd wʌnˈself ɒn ˈsʌmθɪŋ/ phrase tự hào về điều gì
knit and crochet /nɪt ænd krəʊˈʃeɪ/ phrase đan và móc (len)
establish /ɪˈstæblɪʃ/ v thành lập, thiết lập
spark interest /spɑːk ˈɪntrest/ phrase khơi dậy sự hứng thú
uniformity /ˌjuːnɪˈfɔːməti/ n tính đồng nhất, sự giống nhau

4. Why do many children like to make things by hand?

  • A (Answer): Children like making things by hand for fun and creativity.
  • R (Reason): It lets them transform simple materials into something new.
  • E (Example): Paper and glue can become a paper lily or ninja star.
  • C (Consequence): It boosts creativity and gives a sense of accomplishment.

Because it is fun, of course. But if you were to ask me on a deeper level, I would say it is the inexplicable joy of being able to create. For a moment, it was just some loose sheets of paper and sticks of glue, and the next it had turned into a paper lily or a jumping frog or a ninja star that you throw at your classmate.

inexplicable /ˌɪnɪkˈsplɪkəbl/ adj không thể giải thích được, khó tả
loose sheets /luːs ʃiːts/ phrase các tờ (giấy) rời
sense of accomplishment /sens əv əˈkʌmplɪʃmənt/ phrase cảm giác hoàn thành / tự hào về thành quả
transform /trænsˈfɔːm/ v biến đổi, chuyển hóa
deeper level /ˈdiːpə(r) ˈlevl/ phrase mức độ sâu sắc hơn

5. What are the benefits for students to learn to make things by hand?

  • A (Answer): Hand-making enhances motor skills and focus.
  • R (Reason): DIY projects boost hand-eye coordination.
  • E (Example): Crafting keeps kids engaged.
  • C (Consequence): This improves cognitive skills and reduces screen time.

By students, I assume it’s kindergarten and primary school students, so I would say it has some perks for their fine motor skills. Children at this age are still subconsciously developing hand-eye coordination and DIY projects are perfect to foster this. Another thing that comes to my mind is their much needed concentration. I mean, talk about an elixir to iPad kids!

perk /pɜːk/ n lợi ích, đặc quyền
fine motor skills /faɪn ˈməʊtə(r) skɪlz/ phrase kỹ năng vận động tinh (sự khéo léo của bàn tay, ngón tay)
subconsciously /ˌsʌbˈkɒnʃəsli/ adv một cách vô thức, trong tiềm thức
foster /ˈfɒstə(r)/ v thúc đẩy, nuôi dưỡng, phát triển
elixir /ɪˈlɪksə(r)/ n thần dược, phương thuốc kỳ diệu (trong bài: giải pháp cho trẻ nghiện ipad)
