IELTS Speaking Describe a place

Housing & Places (Nhà ở & Địa điểm) là chủ đề phổ biến, thường xuất hiện với tần suất dày đặc trong các bài thi IELTS Speaking.

Đề bài IELTS Speaking Part 2 thuộc chủ đề này khá rộng và có thể yêu cầu thí sinh miêu tả một nơi chốn bất kỳ hoặc một địa điểm cụ thể. Do đó, thí sinh cần trang bị cho bản thân vốn từ vựng đa dạng và sử dụng các cấu trúc ngữ pháp linh hoạt để có thể ghi điểm cao trong phần thi này.

Sample answer describe a place

Áp dụng công thức ISO, chúng ta cùng trả lời theo format:

Khi giới thiệu địa điểm, bạn nên chú ý vào

Describe a place you would like to visit in the future.

You should say:

• where it is

• what the main attractions are

• how you know this place

and explain why you want to visit this place.

Sample: 

I’ve traveled quite a lot but for some reason, I’ve never got the chance to visit Europe. Paris, in particular, has been on my travel bucket list since my college years. The city is known for its fashion and delectable cuisine, which I’d love to experience first-hand one day.

As a matter of fact, Paris is one of the world’s top fashion capitals, where anyone working in the fashion industry would kill to visit. I draw lots of style inspiration from influencers and bloggers based in Paris, since I really admire how effortlessly chic Parisians dress themselves. What’s more, ever since I watched Emily in Paris, a popular Netflix TV show, I’ve always wanted visit Paris to immerse in its diverse fashion scene.

In addition, I have friends currently studying and working in Paris, who have told me all the great things about the French cuisine. As a fan of sweets, I’m particularly fascinated with the variety of pastries and desserts in Paris. It’s always been my dream to try the authentic French croissants and pain au chocolat while sipping hot coffee at a café with outdoor seating in Paris.

Overall, I’m sure a trip to Paris with my best friends would be my idea of a perfect vacation. I’m also curious as to whether there is anything else about the city that I can explore other than what I’ve heard and seen on social media.

Describe a modern building

You should say:

● Where it is

● What it is used for

● When you go there

● And why you like/dislike it

Sample:

My favorite skyscraper in Hanoi is the Lotte Center, which is situated in the heart of Hanoi. It consists of a shopping mall, apartments, and an office complex. Since Lotte is one of the tallest buildings in the city, it is visible from kilometers away. In fact, when biking around the West Lake, I often use it as the pinpoint mark to indicate my way home.

The best section of the building in my opinion is the department store, which is also highly popular among both locals and foreigners. It carries numerous fashion brands that vary in style and price, so I absolutely love shopping for new clothes here. I tend to buy beauty and cosmetic products at Lotte because of their high quality as well.

Furthermore, I used to work as a sales associate at a store inside Lotte during my summer vacation a few years ago. I had a lot of fun memories with my co-workers here. That was also one of my very first working experiences so this building does hold a special place in my heart.

Describe a historical building

You should say:

• what it is and where it is
• when it was built
• what kind of building it is

and explain why you like to talk about it.

Sample:

Well, the historical building I had a chance to visit is the Temple of Literature, which is one of the most famous old structures in Vietnam, and it is also the must-see travel destination for almost all visitors who arrive in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

I’d like to talk about the Temple of Literature for a few reasons. Firstly, the Temple of Literature is an amazing and magnificent building. It is one of several temples in Vietnam with “Quoc Tu Glam” or the Imperial Academy, which was built inside the temple. The stone statues and inscriptions dotted throughout the temple still retain many of their original features as the most renowned landmark of academia in Vietnam. I’ve been there once to visit and explore the Vietnam’s first national university. Visiting the Temple of Literature, which has now become a memorial to education and literature, I have discovered historical buildings in a revered place that saw thousands of doctors graduate.

Besides, I also feel that the Temple of Literature is the symbol of Vietnamese culture. Originally the university only accepted aristocrats, the elite, and royal family members as students before eventually opening its doors to brighter “commoners". Successful graduates had their names engraved on a stone stele which can be found on top of the stone turtles. That’s why we’re all proud of this ancient structure.

Personally, I believe that the Temple of Literature is attractive for visitors from all over the world. This historic site is ranked as one of Hanoi’s most important cultural places and is steeped in Vietnamese history. And I’m convinced that if you ever go there, you'll definitely be impressed and amazed.

In summary, those are the reasons why when it comes to old buildings, the Temple of Literature is the first one that comes up into my mind.

Describe a place full of colours

You should say:

• What it is
• Where it is
• How it looks like

And explain why you remember it well

Sample

When thinking about a place full of colours, I can’t help but visualize the vivid painting of of the Lantern street in the heart of district 5 which, as much as I know, is a joint project by the District 5 Committee, the HongKong Foundation and The United Nations in Vietnam. The project aims to recreate photos of Saigonese people living in the past, in the post-colonial era.

I think the lanterns have lived up to people’s expectations. I mean, when you look at these nostalgic designs of the bygone era by these walls, against a modern setting, creating such a wonderful juxtaposition. I think this corner isn’t just perfect for the youth to take a photo or selfie, but It’s also a wonderful place for people of our father and grandfather generations, people who actually endured hardships in this era. It’s a great moment for them to relive their youth at the time living in these old houses and travelling by bicycles. I think it’s a wonderful place for people from all age groups.

And you know what, I think the vividness of this place isn’t just reflected by the Hongkong-styled paintings but also by the hanging lanterns and the botanical plants alongside the street. And when I think of the Tet holiday spirit, I immediately think of flowers, they just add an incredible boost of vibrancy to the atmosphere. And the lanterns, they might look a bit pale but trust me, they do come to life by the night time. It’s really wonderful for photos.

It’s a really children-friendly place, for sure. It will be a great childhood memory for them in the way that they think back 10 or 20 years. It will be a great memory.
