Old buildings

1. Have you ever seen some old buildings in the city?

Yes, there are lots of old buildings that I see every day on my way to work/school. I really admire the style of the buildings. They seem to preserve a lot of history. They look outdated compared to the modem buildings around them. But I think that makes them stand out in an interesting way.

2. Do you think we should preserve old buildings in cities?

Yes, I definitely think we should keep old buildings in cities. For one, those buildings represent a city’s history. They show people what designs were popular in the past. For another, old buildings add character to a city. Modem buildings tend to look the same. It’s nice to have some buildings that stand out.

3. Do you prefer living in an old building or a modern house?

S1: I prefer living in an old building. I think old buildings have a sense of character. The architectural style is so beautiful and detailed. Sometimes it feels like I’ve stepped into the past when I go into an old building. It’s a very cool effect.

S2: I prefer living in a modem house. Old buildings can be charming. But they often lack some basic facilities like air conditioning or good plumbing. Modem houses offer a lot more. Plus, old buildings are often worn out or even get mold in some places, which makes me want to live in a newly built building.

4. Are there any old buildings you want to see in the future? Why?

Yes, I’d love to see many of them because I’m really into taking pictures and discovering the history of these architectures. The background stories around these buildings always manage to touch my heart, such as the cathedral in Milan – an iconic destination for tourists and architecture lovers alike for its impressive Gothic design.

Tall buildings

1. Are there tall buildings near your home?

Sample 1 (Example + Advantage): Yes, my neighborhood has seen a lot of development recently, so there are several high-rise apartments nearby. For instance, a 40-story residential tower was just completed last year. The primary advantage of these structures is that they maximize space in the city, helping to curb urban sprawl.

Sample 2 (Time + Popularity): Not many, as I live in a more historic district where low-rise architecture is still widely popular. I spend most of my time surrounded by traditional houses, which I find much more aesthetically pleasing than a concrete jungle of skyscrapers.

2. Do you take photos of buildings?

Sample 1 (Example + Advantage): Definitely. I’m quite interested in architectural marvels. Specifically, whenever I travel to a new city, I try to capture the unique geographical terrain and how the buildings integrate with it. The main benefit is that these photos serve as a visual record of the city's evolution over time.

Sample 2 (Time + Popularity): I dedicate some of my leisure time to "street photography," which often includes interesting buildings. Capturing stunning vistas of city skylines is all the rage on social media right now. I find it fascinating to play with different angles and lighting to highlight a building's unique features.

3. Is there a building that you would like to visit?

Sample 1 (Example + Advantage): I’ve always wanted to see the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. To give you an example, its intricate design and gothic influence are world-renowned. The major draw for me would be experiencing the sense of solitude and wonder inside such a massive, symbolic structure.

Sample 2 (Time + Cost): If I had the time, I would love to visit the Burj Khalifa. While traveling to Dubai can be quite costly, seeing the world's tallest iconic landmark in person would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’m curious to see the panoramic view of the desert from the observation deck.

4. Do you want to live in a tall building?

Sample 1 (Advantage + Example): I’m actually quite partial to the idea of living on a high floor. The primary advantage is the breathtaking outlook you get every morning. For instance, waking up to a view of the entire city skyline would be incredibly therapeutic and inspiring.

Sample 2 (Time + Popularity): To be honest, I prefer staying closer to the ground. While "penthouse living" is highly popular for its status, I find that waiting for elevators can be quite time-consuming. I’d rather have a garden and a sense of unspoiled beauty right outside my door.

I could not recall much about the graphic arts cabinet other than its collection full of French drawings. They started on the website as donations from private collectors, I reckon.

Other corners feature sculpture collections with numerous full-length or bust portraits of mythological or religious figures and models of architectural projects. I was mostly intrigued by this map of the area presented as interactive puzzles. When visitors pick a piece up, they can see information about that specific local area in the back of the piece and the regional speciality on the base

I was not that much interested in the archaeological section, but I could recall seeing animal mummies, cardboard boxes, ancient Egyptian vases that hold the viscera of an embalmed body, and a wooden funerary boat bearing the folk belief in the afterlife.

In hindsight, as an art fanatic, yet having a limited understanding and expertise in arts, I was totally in love with the aesthetic of that museum and the nostalgic mind space it introduced me in.

Speaking Part 3 Sample

Historical buildings

1. Why do people visit historical buildings?

• A (Answer): People visit historical buildings for different reasons.
• R (Reason): Some love history, others for school or work.
• E (Example): History lovers gain knowledge; students do projects.
• C (Consequence): It helps expand knowledge or complete tasks.

There could be many reasons stemming from their personal love for history or their assigned field trip at school or work. Regarding the former, I believe history lovers benefit much from their visits to ancient constructions in terms of knowledge expansion into the historical period such buildings bear. They might also feel a sense of achievement which they can take pride in. When it comes to some others, occasionally, they would be asked to pay a visit to and do their homework about a historic property for a group presentation at school for the history subject or architecture-based ones of those majored in arts and designs. Some might have to conduct a professional report at work about, say, visitors’ experience and feedback, so that maintenance or any other actions would be taking place if needed.

2. Do Vietnamese people like to visit historical buildings?

• A (Answer): It depends on individual preferences.
• R (Reason): Some Vietnamese people love cultural monuments, while others don’t.
• E (Example): History enthusiasts enjoy exploring historical buildings.
• C (Consequence): Those who love it help preserve heritage, while others may not engage much.

I would say it depends. It all boils down to individual preferences. There are, indeed. Vietnamese are crazy about cultural monuments and historic places, with historical buildings being a typical testament of where they would wander around all day without feeling bored. They are often big fans of the good old days, and they tend to actively seek opportunities to surround themselves with it, to understand and champion the heritage. Others who do not share the same interest might not be creatures of such habit.

3. Do most people agree to the government’s funding to protect historical buildings?

• A (Answer) : Yes, most people agree with government funding for historical building protection.
• R (Reason): Many people believe it's important to preserve heritage.
• E (Example): Surveys show high support for funding in the UK.
• C (Consequence): This funding helps maintain historical sites for future generations.

I might have too limited knowledge to claim anything about this, but in my opinion, I’ll go with a yes. I remember reading this article about the public view of the governmental grants to fund repair work and research in historic places in England, I found 2 outstanding statistics. It was cited that in a national representative survey of 2,000 locals, 81% of whom regarded care for historic buildings, monuments and archaeology was personally vital to them, and hence, they were in favour of the authorities’ grant schemes. In another survey of more than 4000 residents in several parts of the country, it is revealed that three quarters of the participants considered the funded projects to reap excellent value for money.

4. Is it necessary to protect historical buildings?

• A (Answer): Yes, it's necessary.
• R (Reason): They preserve history and culture.
• E (Example): Buildings reflect past events and values.
• C (Consequence): Without protection, they may deteriorate and lose significance.

I would agree with that one hundred percent because of the importance of such buildings and the national pride they are associated with. Heritage protection is necessary firstly because the buildings, the sites, the monuments and so on, they carry the weight of the eventful past and generational ideology, which proves that maintenance and refurbishment would act as a needed means to keep the national history alive for the future generation to learn about and to practice their gratitude. Protecting historical buildings is also essential because the collective civic pride might not allow buildings to fall into disrepair and all the historical meanings being ill-treated by indifference from the policy makers, harmful actions of citizens or international tourists.
