| Opinion | Explanation for overspending: I realized that skimping on something I use for 8-10 hours a day is a false economy. The comfort, build quality, and health benefits make it worth every penny. |
Sample Answer
If I were to talk about a purchase that ended up being significantly pricier than I had originally planned, it would definitely be my ergonomic office chair. I went into the store with a budget of about 5 million VND, but after testing several models, I walked out having spent nearly double that amount.
The primary reason I splurged on this chair was the alarming back pain I had been suffering from. As someone who works in curriculum design, I spend countless hours tethered to my desk, and my previous chair offered zero lumbar support. It reached a point where I could barely concentrate on my tasks without constant discomfort. I realized that viewing a chair purely as an expense was the wrong approach; I needed to see it as a long-term investment in my physical health.
Why did I spend more than expected? Well, once I started researching, I quickly grasped that there is a massive gulf in quality between budget furniture and professional-grade ergonomic gear. The premium model I opted for featured unparalleled adjustability, breathable materials, and a build quality that feels like it will last for a decade. Looking back, I believe that skimping on something that dictates my posture for the majority of my waking hours would have been a false economy. While the price tag initially gave me pause, the relief from back pain and the subsequent boost in my productivity have proven that it was worth every penny. It was a classic case of "buy nice or buy twice."

| false economy | /ˌfɔːls ɪˈkɒnəmi/ | idiom | cách tiết kiệm tưởng có lợi trước mắt nhưng thực tế lại khiến tốn kém hơn về lâu dài |
| buy nice or buy twice | /baɪ naɪs ɔː(r) baɪ twaɪs/ | saying/idiom | nên mua đồ chất lượng tốt ngay từ đầu, nếu không có thể phải tốn tiền mua lại lần nữa |

(Introduction) One memorable time when I received something for free was on my birthday. It was a thoughtful gift from my family, and I was really excited because they gave me a new pair of sneakers. My old Jordan had been with me for years, and although I had grown attached to them, they were almost worn out. The lace was starting to cut out, and the upper form was torn. I’d been meaning to replace them, but I hadn’t found the right pair or the time to go shopping for new ones.
(Story) I received the gift at hime during a small family gathering. But it was cozy and intimate celebration with just my closest family members. I remember the monent when they handed me the gift-wrapped box. I wasn’t expecting anything extravagant, but when I opened it and saw the brand-new Jordan. I was pleasantly suprised. They were the exact model I had been wanting for a while, but I hadn’t mentioned it to anyone. I was really touched that my family had noticed my need for new sneakers and got me something so practical.
(Opinion) What made me even happier was that the new headphones had much better materials than my old ones, and they were a lot more comfortable to wear, especially for long periods of time. I play basketball and go for a troll every day, so it was something I knew I would use regularly. I was really grateful because it was the perfect replacement, and I didn’t have to go through the hassle of finding a new pair on my own.
Overall, I felt a deep sense of gratitude and happiness. It wasn’t just about receiving a material gift; it was more about thoughtfulness behind it. My family knew exactly what I needed without me having to ask. I’m staying here reminiscing about that pair of sneakers, feeling like yesterday!

(Introduction) I’d like to recount a frustrating experience I had with an Airbnb booking during the peak tourist season last summer. I had paid for a two-bedroom apartment, specifically choosing it for the extra space and amenities, as I was traveling with a friend. However, upon arrival, I was dismayed to find the owner had given us a one-bedroom apartment instead.
(Story) When I confronted the owner, their attitude was both evasive and unprofessional. They refused to refund extra fees I had paid and even had the audacity to suggest that I look for another apartment. This was an unrealistic suggestion, as the entire building was fully booked due to the high demand during the season. With no other options, my friend and I had to reluctantly stay in the smaller apartment. Sharing a single bedroom felt extremely awkward, and it ruined the sense of privacy we had planned for.
(Opinion) The situation worsened the next morning when I woke up and discovered that the apartment didn’t have a washing machine, even though it was clearly advertised in the listing. To add to disappointment, the so-called “beach view” turned out to be nonexistent, as the window faced another building
The entire experience was infuriating and left me feeling disillusioned with both the host and the platform.

(Introduction) One person I know who enjoys buying low-cost products is my flatmate Tony. He’s in her late 20s, black-and-long-haired and brown-eyed
(Story) He loves shopping for groceries and other non-food items at a retailer called Crescent mall, as they are competitively priced. Last Sunday, he went there and purchased give stain steel scourers for only three quids, which was half as much as they were sold in other places. To get even better bargains, he not only visits the clearance section but also goes from website to website, shifting through circulars for massive discounts.
(Opinion) In fact, he always tells me that he prides himself on having this habit, which saves him up to 50-75% of the food bills, the most recent occasion being paying 900 pences for a value pack of French smoked salami salads which otherwise could have been 6 pounds!
The reason for getting hands on inexpensive items is Tony’s obsession is that he is between jobs at the moment, so I guess as long as he hasn’t found one, he will continue being a frugal shopper.

Speaking Part 3 Sample
Overspending
1. What kind of things are people happy to pay a high price for?
Individuals are typically happy to pay a hefty price tag for products that offer exceptional quality, reliability, or a sense of luxury. Beyond mere functionality, people often invest in premium items because they confer a certain social prestige or provide long-term utility that justifies the initial expense. For instance, purchasing high-end electronics or durable goods is viewed as an investment in efficiency and status, proving that consumers are often willing to trade higher upfront costs for long-term satisfaction.
| hefty price tag | /ˌhefti ˈpraɪs tæɡ/ | nphr | mức giá cao, mức giá đắt đỏ |
| social prestige | /ˌsəʊʃəl preˈstiːʒ/ | nphr | uy tín, địa vị hoặc vị thế xã hội |

| upfront cost | /ˌʌpˈfrʌnt ˈkɒst/ | nphr | chi phí phải trả ngay từ ban đầu |
2. Do you think it is the rich people's responsibility to donate money to people in need?
While it is not a legal requirement, there is a strong societal expectation that those with substantial wealth should contribute to the greater good. Rich individuals possess the unique capacity to fund large-scale philanthropic projects—such as healthcare or education initiatives—that can drive systemic change. By engaging in these acts of benevolence, they not only alleviate suffering but also fulfill a vital moral obligation to address the inequalities that exist within society.
| substantial wealth | /səbˈstænʃəl welθ/ | nphr | khối tài sản lớn, sự giàu có đáng kể |
| moral obligation | /ˌmɒrəl ˌɒblɪˈɡeɪʃən/ | nphr | nghĩa vụ đạo đức, trách nhiệm mà một người cảm thấy nên thực hiện vì lý do đạo đức |
| the greater good | /ðə ˌɡreɪtə ˈɡʊd/ | nphr | lợi ích chung của xã hội hoặc cộng đồng |

| alleviate suffering | /əˈliːvieɪt ˈsʌfərɪŋ/ | vphr | làm giảm bớt đau khổ, khó khăn của người khác |
3. Do people buy things they don't need?
Undeniably, impulsive consumption has become a pervasive habit in our society, fueled by aggressive marketing and the constant bombardment of advertisements. Many people fall into the trap of purchasing items they do not truly need simply because of social pressure or the fleeting psychological gratification of a new purchase. This trend is particularly damaging because it leads to frivolous expenditure and unnecessary clutter, often undermining an individual's financial stability in the long run.
| impulsive consumption | /ɪmˈpʌlsɪv kənˈsʌmpʃən/ | nphr | hành vi tiêu dùng bốc đồng, mua sắm không suy nghĩ kỹ |
| frivolous expenditure | /ˈfrɪvələs ɪkˈspendɪtʃə(r)/ | nphr | việc chi tiêu phù phiếm, không thực sự cần thiết |
| constant bombardment of advertisements | /ˈkɒnstənt bɒmˈbɑːdmənt əv ədˈvɜːtɪsmənts/ | nphr | việc liên tục bị “dội” bởi một lượng lớn quảng cáo |
| psychological gratification | /ˌsaɪkəˈlɒdʒɪkəl ˌɡrætɪfɪˈkeɪʃən/ | nphr | cảm giác thỏa mãn về mặt tâm lý |
| undermine financial stability | /ˌʌndəˈmaɪn faɪˈnænʃəl stəˈbɪləti/ | vphr | làm suy yếu sự ổn định tài chính |
4. Do you think it is important to save money? Why?
Cultivating the habit of saving is the bedrock of financial independence and long-term security. Having a financial buffer allows individuals to weather the storms of life—such as sudden illness or unexpected unemployment—without being forced into debt. Beyond just emergency preparedness, consistent saving empowers people to pursue life goals with confidence, providing the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are prepared for whatever the future may hold.
| bedrock of financial independence | /ˈbedrɒk əv faɪˈnænʃəl ˌɪndɪˈpendəns/ | nphr | nền tảng cốt lõi của sự độc lập tài chính |

| peace of mind | /ˌpiːs əv ˈmaɪnd/ | nphr | cảm giác an tâm, không phải lo lắng về vấn đề nào đó |
5. What do you think young people spend most of their money on?
The spending habits of young people are heavily skewed towards experiential consumption and digital connectivity. Rather than saving exclusively for long-term assets, they often prioritize dining out, travel, and the latest technological gadgets, which help them maintain their social lives and self-expression. While this lifestyle provides immediate gratification, it can sometimes come at the cost of building long-term wealth, creating a tension between enjoying one's youth and planning for the future.
| experiential consumption | /ɪkˌspɪəriˈenʃəl kənˈsʌmpʃən/ | nphr | tiêu dùng cho trải nghiệm thay vì chủ yếu mua tài sản, vật chất |
| immediate gratification | /ɪˈmiːdiət ˌɡrætɪfɪˈkeɪʃən/ | nphr | sự thỏa mãn tức thì, cảm giác hài lòng có được ngay lập tức |
| digital connectivity | /ˈdɪdʒɪtəl ˌkɒnekˈtɪvəti/ | nphr | khả năng kết nối với người khác thông qua công nghệ và các nền tảng kỹ thuật số |
| self-expression | /ˌself ɪkˈspreʃən/ | n | sự thể hiện bản thân, cá tính, sở thích hoặc quan điểm cá nhân |
| build long-term wealth | /bɪld ˌlɒŋ tɜːm ˈwelθ/ | vphr | tích lũy và xây dựng tài sản trong dài hạn |
6. Do you often buy more than you expected?
I admit that, like many people, I occasionally fall prey to marketing ploys that entice me to spend more than intended. When shopping without a clear list, it is incredibly easy to be swayed by promotions or 'limited-time offers' that create a false sense of urgency. To avoid this, I have learned that the best strategy is to exercise self-discipline and strictly adhere to a pre-planned budget, which keeps my spending aligned with my actual needs.
| marketing ploy | /ˈmɑːkɪtɪŋ plɔɪ/ | nphr | chiêu trò, thủ thuật tiếp thị nhằm tác động đến quyết định mua hàng |
| exercise self-discipline | /ˈeksəsaɪz ˌself ˈdɪsəplɪn/ | vphr | rèn luyện/thực hành khả năng tự kiểm soát bản thân |
| fall prey to something | /fɔːl preɪ tə ˈsʌmθɪŋ/ | idiom | trở thành nạn nhân, dễ bị mắc bẫy hoặc bị tác động bởi điều gì |
| a false sense of urgency | /ə fɔːls sens əv ˈɜːdʒənsi/ | nphr | cảm giác cấp bách giả tạo khiến một người nghĩ rằng phải hành động ngay |
| adhere to a budget | /ədˈhɪə(r) tə ə ˈbʌdʒɪt/ | vphr | tuân thủ ngân sách đã đặt ra, không chi tiêu vượt quá kế hoạch |
Mall and street market
1. What are the differences between shopping in a shopping mall and in a street market?
I believe shopping in a mall typically offers a more organized, climate-controlled environment with a wide variety of branded stores. Street markets, on the other hand, tend to have a more chaotic, open-air surroundings with vendors selling both new and secondhand goods. Also, the latter offers goods at a much lower price, which is why it’s the go-to location for me.

2. Is advertising important?
Yes, advertising is key in helping businesses raise brand awareness, which in turn drives sales. In Vietnam, startups would use digital ads on social media to extend the reach to potential buyers, converting them into customers.
| raise brand awareness | /reɪz brænd əˈweənəs/ | vphr | nâng cao mức độ nhận diện thương hiệu |
| drive sales | /draɪv seɪlz/ | vphr | thúc đẩy doanh số bán hàng |
| digital ad | /ˈdɪdʒɪtəl æd/ | nphr | quảng cáo kỹ thuật số, quảng cáo trên các nền tảng trực tuyến |

| potential buyer | /pəˈtenʃəl ˈbaɪə(r)/ | nphr | khách hàng/người mua tiềm năng |
3. What are the disadvantages of shopping in a street market?
One problem area is that the products sold are not properly labeled with clear origins. What this means is that the quality and authenticity are questionable at best and disregarded at worst. Further, the selection of products would be more limited, like only those produced locally would be in stock.
| properly labeled | /ˈprɒpəli ˈleɪbəld/ | adjphr | được dán nhãn, ghi thông tin đầy đủ và rõ ràng |
| clear origin | /klɪə(r) ˈɒrɪdʒɪn/ | nphr | nguồn gốc rõ ràng của sản phẩm |
| authenticity | /ˌɔːθenˈtɪsəti/ | n | tính xác thực, mức độ chính hãng của sản phẩm |
| questionable at best | /ˈkwestʃənəbəl ət best/ | phrase | tốt nhất thì cũng chỉ ở mức đáng nghi ngờ, không thực sự đáng tin |
| in stock | /ɪn stɒk/ | phrase | đang có sẵn hàng để bán hoặc mua |
4. Do you think things are more expensive in big shopping malls?
Yes. I believe items are pricier in major shopping centers. This is due to higher overheads, including the rent to set up kiosks, that retailers have to incur. In fact, some expensive products like jewelry are even priced twice as high in shopping centers as elsewhere.
| set up a kiosk | /set ʌp ə ˈkiːɒsk/ | vphr | mở, thiết lập một quầy bán hàng nhỏ |
| incur costs | /ɪnˈkɜː(r) kɒsts/ | vphr | phát sinh, phải chịu các khoản chi phí |
| be priced twice as high | /bi praɪst twaɪs əz haɪ/ | phrase | được bán với mức giá cao gấp đôi |
5. Have you ever experienced any problems when traveling? What happened?
Oh, definitely. Once, when I was on a trip, my flight got delayed for hours due to bad weather. It messed up my whole itinerary, and I had to rebook a connecting flight, which was super stressful. Another time, I lost my luggage at the airport—it ended up in a different country! Luckily, I had packed some essentials in my carry-on, but it was still a hassle trying to sort everything out with the airline. I’ve also had moments where I got lost in a new city because I couldn’t understand the signage, but honestly, those situations usually turn into good stories later on.
| carry-on | /ˈkæri ɒn/ | n | hành lý xách tay được phép mang lên máy bay |
| signage | /ˈsaɪnɪdʒ/ | n | hệ thống biển báo, biển chỉ dẫn ở một địa điểm |
Customer experience
1. Under what circumstances do people typically receive poor service?
People typically receive poor service in situations where businesses are understaffed, poorly managed, or lack proper training for their staff. For example, during peak hours, restaurants or customer service centers may struggle to handle high demand, leading to delays and subpar experiences. Additionally, when companies prioritize profit over quality, they may cut corners, resulting in inadequate service.
| prioritize profit over quality | /praɪˈɒrətaɪz ˈprɒfɪt ˈəʊvə ˈkwɒləti/ | vphr | đặt lợi nhuận lên trên chất lượng sản phẩm/dịch vụ |
2. Do you find complaining in person or complaining via email more effective?
I believe complaining in person tends to be more effective because it allows for immediate feedback and a direct conversation with the service provider. This method often results in a quicker resolution and a better understanding of the customer’s concerns. On the other hand, complaining via email can take longer to receive a response, and the lack of face-to-face interaction might result in miscommunication or less empathy from the service provider.
| immediate feedback | /ɪˈmiːdiət ˈfiːdbæk/ | nphr | phản hồi ngay lập tức |
| miscommunication | /ˌmɪskəˌmjuːnɪˈkeɪʃən/ | n | sự hiểu nhầm do giao tiếp hoặc truyền đạt thông tin không hiệu quả |

3. Why are some people always dissatisfied with all the services provided by restaurants or stores?
Some people are always dissatisfied because they have unrealistic expectations or a negative mindset toward service in general. They may expect perfection in every interaction, ignoring minor issues that are part of normal customer experiences. Additionally, people with a tendency toward perfectionism may focus excessively on flaws, leading to constant dissatisfaction.

The value of the gift
1. Do people love receiving free gifts?
I don’t think I’m qualified to speak for everyone, but I think that for most people, getting something for free would be the highlight of their day, especially if it’s on a special occasion, for example a birthday, or an anniversary. The act of gifting someone shows that you care a lot about them, and that you are willing to spend the time and effort to get them something that they want. So, I do think that being at the receiving-end of that thoughtfulness can make a person very happy.
| qualified to speak for someone | /ˈkwɒlɪfaɪd tə spiːk fɔː(r) ˈsʌmwʌn/ | phrase | đủ cơ sở hoặc tư cách để nói thay cho ai đó |
| the highlight of one’s day | /ðə ˈhaɪlaɪt əv wʌnz deɪ/ | nphr | điều vui nhất, đáng nhớ nhất trong ngày |

| be on the receiving end of something | /bi ɒn ðə rɪˈsiːvɪŋ end əv ˈsʌmθɪŋ/ | phrase | là người nhận một hành động, sự đối xử hoặc lợi ích nào đó |
2. Do you think people would value things more when they buy them?
Yes, absolutely, unless they are irresponsible with their finances, of course. What I mean is once a person gets a job and starts to be self-sufficient, they tend to be more considerate when it comes to buying things, since it’s their hard-earned money that they’re spending. And I also think that when it’s your money on the line, you’d want to get more value out of the product that you bought. Take a smartphone as an example, it’s an expensive item – costing the average person at least half of their monthly income. With such a significant portion of their salary spent on one product, they would value it more and try to be careful with it.
3. Do people buy things without looking at the price?
To be honest, I think this applies to a small proportion of the population – the ones who are financially comfortable. On the other hand, for most people, I think it’s a good idea to be aware of how much things cost, because this would give them a better handle of their spending and finances.
| financially comfortable | /faɪˈnænʃəli ˈkʌmftəbəl/ | adjphr | có tình hình tài chính thoải mái, không phải quá lo lắng về tiền bạc |
| a small proportion of the population | /ə smɔːl prəˈpɔːʃən əv ðə ˌpɒpjəˈleɪʃən/ | nphr | một tỷ lệ nhỏ trong dân số |
| be aware of the cost | /bi əˈweə(r) əv ðə kɒst/ | phrase | nhận thức rõ một món đồ hoặc dịch vụ có giá bao nhiêu |
| have a better handle on something | /hæv ə ˈbetə(r) ˈhændəl ɒn ˈsʌmθɪŋ/ | phrase | kiểm soát hoặc hiểu một vấn đề tốt hơn |
| manage one’s spending | /ˈmænɪdʒ wʌnz ˈspendɪŋ/ | vphr | quản lý việc chi tiêu của bản thân |
4. Why do companies give free gifts to people? Do you think that it is some kind of a trick?
It’s a win-win situation, honestly. I mean, obviously it’s a marketing scheme – giving the consumers free stuff so that they would promote the brand. But the person receiving the free products also gets something in return. With the amount of competition between different companies nowadays, I think that giving free gifts has become common practice – every company does this. So yes, it’s a trick, but it’s become such a common occurrence that most people don’t care anymore – in fact, I’d bet that most people would enjoy receiving free stuff from brands.
| win-win situation | /ˌwɪn ˈwɪn ˌsɪtʃuˈeɪʃən/ | nphr | tình huống mà cả hai bên đều nhận được lợi ích |

| get something in return | /ɡet ˈsʌmθɪŋ ɪn rɪˈtɜːn/ | vphr | nhận được một lợi ích hoặc thứ gì đó để đáp lại |
| common practice | /ˌkɒmən ˈpræktɪs/ | nphr | cách làm phổ biến, thường xuyên được nhiều người hoặc doanh nghiệp áp dụng |
