1. What’s the weather like in your country?
Band 6.0+
My country has a tropical climate, so it is usually hot and humid. There are two main seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The dry season is hot and sunny, while the rainy season often has heavy showers and thunderstorms.
Band 8.0+
Sample 1: Well, as you could probably tell, I’m currently residing in Vietnam, which is a tropical country. When it comes to the weather here, for the most part, it’s kinda scorching hot and humid year-round. I mean, there have been articles about the heatwaves of over 40 degrees celsius in Ho Chi Minh city in the recent years during summer
Sample 2: Well, I live in Saigon, where it’s hot and humid all year round. It is often said that there are only two seasons here: the rainy season and the dry season.
- Humid (adj) ẩm ướt; (of air and weather conditions) containing extremely small drops of water in the air

2. Does the weather affect what you do?
Band 6.0+
Yes, it does. When it’s too hot, I feel tired and lazy, so I prefer staying indoors. On rainy days, I avoid going outside because I don’t like getting wet. However, when the weather is cool and pleasant, I feel more energetic and enjoy outdoor activities like jogging or walking in the park.
Band 8.0+
Sample: Oh yeah, definitely! In Saigon, most of us get around on bikes, so when it’s pouring rain, we prefer to stay indoors. Riding a motorbike in the rain is basically asking for trouble. On top of that, between 11 am and 4 pm, it’s scorching hot outside. I’d sweat buckets in less than five minutes if I dared to step out into the blazing sun. So, if I see rain on the horizon or temperatures soaring above 35 degrees Celsius, you bet I’ll cancel my plans.
- Asking for trouble (idiom) gây rắc rối
- Scorching hot (adj) rất nóng
- On the horizon (idiomatic expression) sắp xảy ra
3. What is your favorite season?
Band 6.0+ (Technique: Advantage)
I like the cool season because the temperature is not too high, and it’s comfortable to go outside. I enjoy wearing light sweaters and drinking hot coffee. It’s also a great time for traveling because the weather is nice and not too extreme.
Band 8.0+
Sample: Well, you see, we don’t have a proper fall or spring here. It’s just hot or rainy most of the time. But if I had to pick, I’d say I’m most comfortable around Christmas. The weather cools down a bit, and the sun doesn’t roast us every day. Unfortunately, that heavenly weather only lasts for about two weeks each year.
- Roast (v) [figurative] nướng;to cook food in an oven or over a fire

4. What’s the weather like where you live?
Band 6.0+
Where I live, the weather is usually hot and sunny. In summer, the temperature can be very high, making it uncomfortable to go outside. Sometimes, there are heavy rains, but they don’t last long. The winters here are not too cold, which is nice.
Band 8.0+
I come from a mountainous area so the weather there is pretty mild all year round, neither too hot nor too cold, which is kinda ideal for an outdoorsy person like me.
- Mild (adj): dịu nhẹ, ôn hòa
- Outdoorsy person(n) người thích ở, hoạt động ngoài trời
5. Are you in the habit of checking the weather forecast?
Band 6.0+ (Technique: Advantage)
Yes, I am. I often check the weather forecast in the morning to see if I should bring an umbrella or a jacket. It helps me prepare for the day and decide what to wear.
Band 8.0+
Sample 2: Honestly, I don’t check the weather much these days because it’s pretty predictable here in Saigon. I make a point of carrying a raincoat and an umbrella with me all the time, just in case. But when I lived in Kansas, it was a different story. The weather there could change like crazy! Like, the morning could be bright and sunny and a nice 20 degrees Celsius, but it could shoot up to 40 by 3pm, and then drop to 10 by sunset.
- Make a point of doing something (idiom) luôn nhớ làm một việc gì đó
- Head out (phrasal verb) ra ngoài; go out
6. What do you think are the effects of climate change in recent years?
Band 6.0+
I think climate change has caused extreme weather conditions, like stronger storms, heatwaves, and floods. The temperature is rising, and seasons are becoming less predictable. This affects people’s lives and the environment.
Band 8.0+ (Technique: Reason)
Sample 1: I suppose global warming has numerous adverse effects on not only humans but other species as well. A variety of species are at risk of becoming extinct due to climate change-related problems such as forest fires, extreme weather, and diseases. The change in the global surface temperature can also exacerbate water shortages in already water-stressed regions, leading to many people now facing the threat of not having enough water on a regular basis.
- Adverse effect (n) tác động xấu
- Be at risk of becoming extinct: có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng
- Exacerbate (v) làm tệ hơn, làm xấu đi
- Water shortage (n) thiếu nước
Sample 2: (Technique: Example)
Well, there has been countless evidence of climate change lately. I’ve read about iconic cities like Venice and Jakarta sinking because of rising sea levels caused by melting glaciers. And it’s not just about cities. The rippling effects of global warming also include habitat loss, pushing several species closer to the brink of extinction. Here in Saigon, it has become apparent that the rainy season starts earlier and lasts longer compared to 20 years ago. And summers have never been hotter!
- Sea level (n) mực nước biển;the average height of the sea where it meets the land
- Glacier (n) sông băng;a large mass of ice that moves slowly
- Habitat loss (n) sự mất môi trường sống;the reduction in the amount of space where a particular species, or group of species can survive and reproduce.
- Brink (n) bờ vực;the edge, border, or verge of a cliff
7. Would you like to visit other cities that have different climates from where you live?
Band 6.0+ (Technique: Reason)
Yes, of course! I would love to visit cold places where I can see snow because I have never experienced that before. I also want to travel to cooler cities to escape the hot weather in my country.
Band 8.0+
Sample: Sure, it would be terrific if I got to enjoy different climates in other regions. Though I count myself very fortunate to have been able to enjoy four distinct seasons in Kansas back then, I’d like to have some more novel experiences with other kinds of weather.
- novel experiences (n) những trải nghiệm mới
- count oneself fortunate: cảm thấy bản thân rất may mắn
8. What’s the weather like in your country?
It depends on which part of the country you are referring to. I’m currently living in the North, I would say the weather is a bit comfortable because it has all four seasons but sometimes the weather can also get pretty extreme, especially in the summer when the temperature can reach up to 40 degree celcius due to terrifying drastic heatwaves sweeping across the city.
9. Which season do you like best?
I’m a big fan of summer I think summer is the best season because all the sport activities or physical activities are at their ultimate level in the summer because you sweat and by sweating your body detoxifies so it’s really good for you, it’s like refreshing although every now and then I might get some serious skin complaints like rash or allergies.
10. Do you do different things in different weather?
Yeah I surely do. I mean I do a lot of exercises during the summer time. But when it comes to winter, when the weather is bleak, the sky looks so grey and dull and because of the thick cloud cover, I find myself so draggy and completely not productive at all
11. Would you prefer to live in a place that has the same weather all year, or a place that has four seasons?
I must say that I am lucky to have four seasons to enjoy although the sharp distinction among season is slowly disappearing in the North. It’s kind of boring to me if we have only just one season all year, like the Southern part of Vietnam, the weather is hot all year round and only have two seasons which are rainy season and dry season.
12. Do you think the weather is more important to people who play sports?
Absolutely yes, especially to people who play outdoor sports are most affected. For instance, thas a significant impact on the performance of athletes. High temperature can cause various heat illnesses such as heat cramps and heatstroke, while very low temperatures may lead to hypothermia.
13.How is the weather today?
Well, I think today is a lovely day, even though it rained a little bit this morning. When I got out of the house, the weather seemed to brighten up and I hope it will stay like that for the rest of the day.
14.What’s your favourite kind of weather?
I'm actually not fond of any particular kind of weather, you know. I think every season has its own unique beauty and it's up to us to enjoy it. For example, not many people like the freezing weather in the winter, but I see it as a perfect occasion for me to bundle up and show off my clothes.
15. What is the climate like in your country?
Vietnam is a tropical country, you know, so the climate here is quite hot and humid. What upsets me the most is that the weather is getting more unpredictable. It can cats and dogs in the morning and suddenly clear out in the afternoon.
16. Does the weather affect people’s lives in your country?
I believe that the weather always affects us in every aspect. If it is a gloomy day, I'm pretty sure everyone will easily get bored or tired of whatever they are doing. In contrast, the sunny days make us feel alive and upbeat.
17.Do people change in the summer?
It can get sweltering in the summery months, so I think it will exert a certain impact on people's temperament. Everyone becomes less patient than usual, and they often get frustrated and easily get upset over some trivial matters.
