Speaking Part 1 topic Housework

1. Do you often do housework at home?

 Band 6.0+

Yes, I do. I try to help with housework as much as I can because I think it is important to keep the house clean and tidy. However, sometimes I am busy with work or studying, so I don’t do it as often as I should.

 Band 8.0+

(Answer 1) Well, of course, I do housework on a regular basis/regularly. This is primarily because doing household chores is the norm in most Vietnamese households. And parents are always occupied with work so we should give them a hand.

(Answer 2) Well given the fact that my house hires a housekeeper who takes care of all the chores in my family, so I don’t even have to lift a finger(trả lời theo kiểu nhà giàu nứt vách)

  • Lift a linger(idiomatic expression):

2. What kind of housework do you often do?

 Band 6.0+

I usually do basic chores like sweeping the floor, washing the dishes, and doing the laundry. On weekends, I also help my parents clean the house and sometimes I cook simple meals. I don’t mind doing housework, but I don’t really like cleaning the bathroom.

 Band 8.0+

Well, I have to do all sorts of things. For the most part, I’m in charge of doing the dishes. I think this is a real hassle because I’m quite allergic to washing detergent. And also I have to cook but I don’t mind that a lot because cooking is my forte. I have acquired a deeper understanding of culinary arts since I start watching the show Master Chef.

3. Did you do housework when you were a child?

 Band 6.0+

Yes, but not a lot. When I was a child, my parents only asked me to do simple tasks like tidying up my room or setting the table before meals. As I grew older, I started doing more housework to help my family.

 Band 8.0+

(Answer 1) Well, absolutely but for the most part, I was exempted from doing housework that is too physically demanding. I just have to do some menial tasks, like sweeping the floor, washing the dishes and sometimes I have to run some errands for my parents like buying the groceries, purchasing some daily necessities.

(Answer 2) Well no, to be honest, I used to be a spoilt brat. Because my family got a housemaid who was in charge of everything so I just sat around on my backside all day long.

4. Who usually does the housework in your family?

All members in my family share the housework. My mother usually does most of the cooking while cleaning is normally my father’s duty. My brother and I are responsible for other chores such as doing the laundry and the washing-up. But it also depends on who is busier.

- most of (pron) /məʊst əv/: hầu hết

- duty (n) /ˈduːti/: trách nhiệm, nhiệm vụ

- responsible (for) (adj) /rɪˈspɑːnsəbl fər/: chịu trách nhiệm về

- chore (n) /tʃɔːr/: việc vặt trong nhà

- do the laundry (col) /duː ðə ˈlɔːndri/: giặt quần áo

- do the washing-up (col) /duː ðə ˌwɑːʃɪŋ ˈʌp/: rửa bát đĩa

5. Do you like doing housework?

Frankly speaking, I’m not really into it. But household chores have become a part of my daily routine. It is a way of showing that I am responsible as well for matters of family because more people helping towards housework means less burden on a single individual.

6. Are there any specific tasks you dislike doing around the house? Why?

I have to admit that cleaning my room is my pet peeve. However, I have to do it every now and then as my mother always grumbles to me about how messy my room is. I don’t mind organizing my things but I prefer if someone else does the actual cleaning.

- admit (v) /ədˈmɪt/: thừa nhận

- sb’s pet peeve (idm) /pet piːv/: điều ai đó đặc biệt không thích

- every now and then (idm) /ˈevri naʊ ən ðen/: thỉnh thoảng

- grumble (v) /ˈɡrʌmbl/: càu nhàu, cằn nhằn

- messy (adj) /ˈmesi/: bừa bộn, lộn xộn

7. What do you think is the most important household task?

I believe doing the washing-up is essential and a clean kitchen should be an integral part of any homemakers. After all, kitchen is the place where we prepare meals and sometimes have snacks. It doesn’t take long before a kitchen can go from cluttered to dirty. That’s why I think it’s important to wash up in order to avoid harmful bacteria.

- essential (adj) /ɪˈsenʃl/: thiết yếu

- integral (adj) /ˈɪntɪɡrəl/: không thể thiếu

- homemaker (n) /ˈhəʊmmeɪkər/: người nội trợ

- cluttered (adj) /ˈklʌtərd/: lộn xộn

- wash up (phr. v) /wɑːʃ ʌp/: dọn dẹp sau khi nấu nướng

- bacteria (n) /bækˈtɪriə/: vi khuẩn
