Speaking Part 1 topic Work/Job

Một video chia sẻ từ Ms Mia 8.5 Speaking:

1. How do you spend your work day?

I usually start off my day with a few meetings with my team or my superiors. Then, my responsibilities vary from day to day. Sometimes, I’d spend the whole day filming different kinds of content. Other days, most of my time is dedicated to administrative work.

2. Is it better to work in the morning or in the afternoon?

Personally, I find that I’m more productive in the morning, especially after I’ve had my coffee and breakfast. My energy is usually the lowest around 4-5 in the afternoon, so for me, it’s better to work during the early hours.

3. What do you do to improve your productivity?

I feel that caffeine really boosts my energy and productivity at work. Whenever I feel tired and sluggish, I just order a big cup of latte and then I can work efficiently again!

6. Do you work or study? (Do you work or are you a student?)

Well, I have just finished college and currently I’m working as a freelance copywriter. This is what I love to do ever since I was a college student. I have a passion for digital marketing, and how blessed I am to have a job that gives me pay cheques and the freedom to create, without having to spend days in an office.

7. Do you enjoy your work? (Do you like your job?)

Yes, very much. Although the money is not much, I believe that it sets the foundation for me to become a better marketer in the future. Furthermore, I get to improve my English constantly. What I appreciate the most is that I can work wherever and whenever I want with no strings attached.

8. Why did you choose to do that kind of work?

I chose to be a copywriter because marketing was my major when I was in college. And I have already accumulated some work experience by taking several part-time jobs before I graduated. Furthermore, this job really suits my interest, since I have an affinity for writing and the alike.

9. Is that a popular job in your country?

I don’t really know. I suppose marketing is a popular choice in general, but not a lot of people can develop a passion for copywriting since they think it can be a dull job. In that case, I don’t really blame them though, because having to create similar contents for days can be quite monotonous.

10. Are there anything special about job?

As I have mentioned earlier, what I love about my job the most is that it gives me the freedom to create. Unlike many other office work, I don’t have to spend an entire day in my office, which is pretty cool. My boss, who is very intuiative, actually encourages me to go outside to find some inspirations for my work.

11. Is there another type of job you would like to do?

Besides this, ever since I was a little girl, I have dreamt of becoming a writer, like J.K Rowling, you know. I think literature is one of the strongest media that can reflect all aspects of life. Journalism sounds great too, but I have never been good at photography, so writing books is probably the only other job I would want to do.

12. Would you recommend your current job to other people?

Yes, I would recommend it to everybody who is majoring in Business in general. Copywriting can be stressful sometimes, but I believe that it can enhance your creativity and imagination to a large extent. If you’re good enough, you can be the trend setter for almost anything in the market.

13. What do you like about your job?/ Why did you choose to do that type of work?

Answer: I guess it’s mainly because of the job flexibility & my passion for journalism. To be more specific, this job offers me alternatives to the typical nine-to-five work schedule, enabling me to find a better balance between work and life. Besides, this job gives me opportunities to pursue my dream to become a journalist down the road.

Or:

Answer: Well I guess the thing I like most about this job is the salary. I make what I’d consider is a lucrative income, which means not only is it enough to cover my bills, but there’s also some extra to spend on whatever I want. So on payday, I often treat myself to a meal at a high-end restaurant or splurge on a nice shirt.

    • Lucrative income: Thu nhập sinh lời
    • High-end: the most sophisticated, and typically the most expensive product in a line: tinh vi nhất và thường đắt nhất, hiểu nghĩa cao cấp.

14.  What do you dislike about your job?

Sometimes I feel dead tired when sitting in front of a computer screen all day long to deal with overwhelming workload.  I mean, I’ve led a sedentary lifestyle which really exerts a negative effect on my physical & mental health & I have had a very hectic schedule, which always keeps me up to my ears in deadlines. Down the road I am yearning for a job that involves dealing with people & makes me feel less stressful.

Vocabulary:

        • Dead tired: exhausted ( Mệt mỏi, kiệt sức)
        • All day long: during the entire day (cả ngày dài, suốt cả ngày)

        • Down the road: in the future (thành ngữ ý chỉ trong tương lai)
        • Yearn for:  to feel a powerful desire for something (để cảm thấy một mong muốn mạnh mẽ cho một cái gì đó)

15. Is there some other kind of work you would rather do?

Actually, I don’t think I’m able to dedicate myself to any other job rather than this one. In fact, to me it’s the experiences and opportunities I can gain that really matters.

To dedicate to Sth: devote (time or effort) to a particular task or purpose ( ý chỉ cống hiến (thời gian hoặc công sức) cho một nhiệm vụ hoặc mục đích cụ thể)

16. Where do you want to see yourself in 10 years?

Well, this question pops into my mind from time to time, but to be honest, I have never managed to have an answer for it. I reckon that 10 years is such a long time and anything could happen, so it is hard to tell from now.

17. Do you miss being a student?

I surely will miss my student life once I get involve in the workplace. For me I think when I’m a student, at least I have someone guide me, whereas at work mostly you must guide yourself. The academic environment appears to be a comfort zone for me, while I’m sure I’ll struggle with fitting in the working environment.

        • To get involve in: to become a part of (an organization) nghĩa là để tham gia vào, trở thành một phần của một tổ chức, cơ quan.
        • To fit in: to become suitable or appropriate for Sth or S nghĩa là để phù hợp với, để trở thành phù hợp hoặc thích hợp cho Sth hoặc SO.

Sample Answer

If I were to pursue a short-term professional endeavor abroad, I would love to work as a freelance Sustainable Curriculum Consultant in Finland. This country is widely regarded as a pioneer in educational reform, and the prospect of contributing to their forward-thinking system is incredibly enticing.

I first became aware of this opportunity through various international educational symposiums I’ve been following. These platforms often showcase how Finnish educators masterfully infuse environmental awareness into their daily curriculum. The job itself would involve collaborating with local schools to design short, intensive workshops that demonstrate how to teach language through the lens of sustainability. It’s not just about content; it’s about methodology.

I am deeply keen on this role for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it offers an unparalleled opportunity for professional cross-pollination. Working in a different cultural context would challenge my current pedagogical frameworks and force me to think outside the box.

Furthermore, I have always admired the Finnish approach to "learning by doing," and I want to experience that first-hand. Immersing myself in a society that prioritizes both academic rigor and environmental stewardship would be a transformative experience. Ultimately, this short-term stint would serve as a catalyst for my professional evolution, allowing me to bring back cutting-edge insights to enhance the educational materials I develop at home.

(Introduction) Well, the first person that springs to my mind when I read this topic is my best friend, Tony. Tony and I have been friends for what feels like forever and we get on very well. He always wanted to be a decent doctor, and now he’s studying abroad to make that dream a reality.

(Story) The reason why I think his job is essential to society is, you know, what’s more important than our health? And who do we rely on when we are unwell? Doctors, exactly. They help us get back on our feet when we are sick or need surgery. It’s hard to imagine life without them. That’s why I have so much respect for doctors, especially who are truly dedicated.
If I am not mistaken, Tony’s motivation to become a doctor really sparked when he saw a doctor demanding a bride from a patient. It was a real eye-opener for him and made him determined to be a different kind of doctor, one who genuinely cares for his patients.

(Opinion) However, his journey to becoming a doctor was not a walk in the park. At first, his parents disagreed and tried to talk him out of it, worrying that it would take years of hard work and that studying abroad would be expensive. But Tony was determined. Can you imagine how tough it must have been for him? He had to balance intense studies with part-time jobs to pay for his education. His determination is something I truly admire. So yeah, Tony is, hands down, one of the people I look up to the most and his job is truly indispensable for society.

4. Một số đề khác

a. Describe your idea of making a good first impression in a job interview.

You should say:

- why it is important.

- is it important to make a good last impression as well

- what ways would you do it in your job interview

- and explain how to make a good first impression in a job interview.

Band 8 Sample Answer:

It’s of common sense that most people at my age are now seeking for good job opportunity. Thus, I have to get to know how to leave a good first impression in a job interview. Today, I would like to share with you some of my knowledge about this topic.

In a professional situation, the first impressions are significantly important. Most job interviews don’t last more than 45 minutes. In such a short period of time, from those who don’t know anything about ourselves, we have to persuade them that we are qualified enough for the position we applied for. Thus, a good first impression can help to increase the success rate in our application process.

There are many things a candidate can do create positive first impression. You may choose following some among these tips or all of them, such as arriving on time for the interview, dressing formally, use appropriate ways of behavior and communications. Besides, there are some noted points that you should pay much attention to like job description, company information which you acquired through researches. By going through the required tasks and skills for the vacancy, company’s culture or giving some suggestions to improve productivity of the tasks you might be in charge of when you take that position can help you stand out from other candidate. For me, I would choose to follow all tips above.

Apart from first impression, I strongly believe that last impressions are important as well. Often we are not accepted immediately in the interview. Recruiting team will have to take into account all candidates’ performances during the interview to choose the most suitable ones for the position. Therefore, good first impression only is not enough, we have to build good relationship with recruiters by making good last impression, too. By doing so, we showed our respect to recruiters and the job we apply for.

Being in a job interview is not an enjoyable experience. However, we have to get through it to pursue our dream jobs. Thus, we should prepare well enough for occasions like that.

Vocabulary:

- be of common sense: something are widely known (ý chỉ độ phổ biến chung, một cái gì đó được biết đến rộng rãi)

Ex: The fact that “the sun rises in the east and set in the west” is of common sense.

- go through: study carefully about ( ý chỉ học hành, nghiên cứu cẩn thận về)

Ex: Collins went through every legal book she could find.

- vacancy: a job that no one is doing and is available for someone new to do ( ý chỉ vị trí tuyển dụng)

Ex: There is a vacancy for a shop assistant on Saturdays.

- stand out: to be much better than other similar things or people ( ý chỉ nổi bật, tốt hơn nhiều so với những thứ hoặc những thứ tương tự khác)

Ex: We had lots of good applicants for the job, but one stood out from the rest.

- take into account: to consider or remember something when judging a situation

Ex: A good architect takes into account the building’s surroundings.

- get through: to manage to deal with a difficult situation (vượt qua, ý chỉ để quản lý đối phó với một tình huống khó khăn)

Ex: I just have to get through the first five minutes of my speech, and then I’ll be fine.

b. Describe an interesting job you want to do in the future.

When I was just 9 or 10 years old, I always thought that my future profession could be a doctor - a kind of superhero so that I could help and save people’s life. However, ever since I was in high school, I have realized that being a journalist is my lifelong goal.

The first justification why I want to become a journalist is that I can have the opportunity to be a “globetrotter” to write about important events or introduce latest news to people. Just the thought of travelling to different places not only in my country but also in other regions makes me feel excited. The second reason and also another interesting fact about being a journalist is that it provides me with the chance to work and communicate with people from all walks of life and from various areas, which encourage mutual understanding.

And to become a journalist, I think I must be well-prepared to meet the requirements. First, when finishing the third year in university, I should participate in an internship in a prestigious communications agency and then I need to study hard so that I can get a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism.

Becoming a journalist is not an easy task at all but to me, practice makes perfect and I will try my best to realize my dream!

Speaking Part 3 topic Job/Work

Part 3 chúng ta áp dụng công thức A (Answer), R (Reason), E (Example), C (Consequence) để trả lời hay nhé.

1. What kind of jobs are the most popular in your country?

A Tech & Service sectors.
R High growth & competitive packages.
E Software developers, digital marketing, hospitality.
C Education system shifts to match demand.

In my country, roles within the technology and service sectors are currently the most sought-after. The primary reason is that these industries are expanding at an unprecedented rate, offering significantly higher compensation and more flexible working environments compared to traditional sectors. For instance, a vast number of fresh graduates are actively pursuing careers as software developers, digital marketers, or hotel managers. Consequently, educational institutions have been forced to revamp their curricula to better align with the rising demand for these specialized technical skills.

Highlighted Vocabulary:

        • Sought-after: Được săn đón.
        • Unprecedented rate: Tốc độ chưa từng có.
        • Compensation: Lương thưởng/đãi ngộ.
        • Revamp their curricula: Thay đổi/cải tổ chương trình học.

2. Is salary the main reason why people choose a certain job?

A Salary is a driver, but not the sole factor.
R Focus on well-being and personal growth.
E Turning down a high-paying, high-stress job for better culture.
C Employers must offer more than just money to retain talent.

While a competitive salary is undeniably a paramount driver, I would argue it is not always the sole deciding factor. Nowadays, professionals increasingly prioritize their mental well-being, work-life balance, and opportunities for long-term career progression. Many people might intentionally forgo a high-paying, high-stress corporate role in favor of a position that offers a more creative or supportive work culture. Consequently, employers are realizing that lucrative pay must be paired with a positive organizational environment to effectively attract and retain top talent.

Highlighted Vocabulary:

        • Paramount driver: Động lực quan trọng nhất.
        • Mental well-being: Sức khỏe tinh thần.
        • Forgo: Từ bỏ/hy sinh.
        • Retain top talent: Giữ chân nhân tài.

3. What should people consider when choosing jobs?

A Professional goals + personal values.
R Jobs are a core part of identity, not just income.
E Weighing career advancement, location, and passion for daily tasks.
C Alignment leads to sustainable satisfaction and avoids burnout.

When selecting a career path, individuals should evaluate both their professional objectives and their internal values. I believe a job is not merely a source of income, but a fundamental component of one's identity; thus, long-term satisfaction depends on alignment with one's intrinsic interests. For example, candidates should carefully weigh factors like the potential for career advancement, geographical convenience, and whether the daily tasks truly engage them. By taking these holistic factors into account, people are more likely to find sustainable fulfillment and successfully avoid the trap of professional burnout.

Highlighted Vocabulary:

        • Fundamental component of one's identity: Một phần cơ bản của danh tính cá nhân.
        • Career advancement: Thăng tiến sự nghiệp.
        • Holistic: (Nhìn nhận) một cách toàn diện.
        • Sustainable fulfillment: Sự thỏa mãn bền vững.

4. Do people's ideal jobs change as they grow up?

A Yes, career aspirations evolve significantly as individuals mature.
R Perspectives on success and priorities shift with experience.
E Transitioning from ambitious youth dreams to prioritizing stability and family.
C Maturation allows people to recalibrate goals to their life stages.

It is certainly true that career aspirations tend to evolve significantly as individuals mature. As people gain more life experience, their perspectives on what constitutes success, financial stability, and personal priorities shift dramatically. For instance, a youngster might dream of being an adventurous traveler or professional athlete, but later favor a stable, sedentary profession that allows more time for family. This maturation process is natural and essential, allowing people to recalibrate their goals to align with their changing responsibilities and life stages.

Highlighted Vocabulary:

        • Career aspirations: Mong muốn nghề nghiệp.
        • Evolve: Phát triển/thay đổi dần dần.
        • Sedentary profession: Công việc văn phòng/ít vận động.
        • Recalibrate: Điều chỉnh lại.

5. What jobs do children want to do when they grow up?

A Careers that are familiar or idealized in media.
R Choices are influenced by role models and popular stories.
E Aspiring to be teachers, doctors, or digital content creators.
C Early ambitions provide a starting point for exploring interests.

Children generally gravitate toward careers that are either familiar to them in their daily lives or highly idealized in media. At a young age, their choices are heavily influenced by the adults they interact with or the heroes they encounter in stories. It is quite common for primary students to express a desire to become teachers, police officers, doctors, or even digital content creators they follow online. These early ambitions often serve as a constructive starting point for children to explore their nascent interests as they gradually gain a deeper understanding of the professional world.

Highlighted Vocabulary:

        • Gravitate toward: Hướng tới/bị thu hút bởi.
        • Idealized: Lý tưởng hóa.
        • Constructive: Mang tính xây dựng.
        • Nascent interests: Những sở thích mới chớm nở.

6. What kind of job can be called a 'dream job'?

A A synergy between passion, competence, and security.
R Focus on purpose rather than just a paycheck.
E A designer monetizing creativity with a balanced lifestyle.
C Enhances productivity and overall quality of life.

A 'dream job' is typically one that achieves a perfect synergy between an individual's core passions, their inherent competence, and financial security. It represents a role where a person feels a profound sense of purpose rather than simply working for a paycheck. For example, a graphic designer who loves visual arts and can monetize their creativity while maintaining a balanced lifestyle would consider that their ultimate career goal. Ultimately, such a position not only fosters high productivity but also contributes significantly to an individual's overall quality of life and sense of fulfillment.

Highlighted Vocabulary:

        • Synergy: Sự cộng hưởng/kết hợp hoàn hảo.
        • Inherent competence: Năng lực bẩm sinh/sẵn có.
        • Monetize: Kiếm tiền từ (sáng tạo/tài năng).
        • Sense of fulfillment: Cảm giác thỏa mãn/viên mãn.

7. Why are some people unwilling to work in other countries?

A The main barriers are often cultural alienation, the struggle of adapting to a new environment, and leaving behind one's established support network.

14. Do you think job satisfaction is more important than salary when choosing a job?

A Job satisfaction is more important than salary.
R Enjoying work boosts motivation and overall happiness.
E A good work environment and meaningful tasks enhance fulfillment.
C However, salary still matters for financial stability.

Sample 1: I do think that being satisfied with what you do takes you far and can be a huge motivation for people. This could be very simple things like being happy with the working environment, the colleagues or more abstract things like the value that it can bring to society or how it fulfills one of your passions. All of these can dictate how happy you are with not only your job but your life in general. That’s not to say salary is not important because it is. Some people just want a job where they can earn a livable or even a high income and that’s that which is a valid viewpoint in my opinion.

        • abstract (a) trừu tượng
        • dictate (v) quyết định
        • livable income (n) mức lương đủ sống
A Job satisfaction is more important than salary.
R A toxic work environment can outweigh financial benefits.
E Supportive colleagues and meaningful work bring long-term happiness.
C Skills can lead to financial success, but true satisfaction is rare.

Sample 2: I believe job satisfaction often takes precedence over salary when choosing a job. While a high salary is appealing, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Imagine working in a toxic environment with an unsupportive boss and uncooperative colleagues. No amount of money can compensate for the stress and dissatisfaction that would cause. On the flip side, a job with a moderate salary but a positive environment, room for growth, and meaningful work can lead to long-term happiness. At the end of the day, if you’re good at something, you can find financial success in many places, but not all of them can offer true satisfaction. That’s an important factor to consider when looking for a job.

        • takes precedence over: quan trọng hơn
        • appealing: hấp dẫn
        • compensate for: bù cho

15. What skills do you think are needed to get a good job these days?

A Tech skills, communication, and teamwork are essential for good jobs.
R Most jobs involve technology and require collaboration.
E Companies seek employees who can work in teams and adapt to digital tools.
C These skills increase job opportunities across various fields.

Sample 1: The first thing that pops into my mind is skills revolving technology. We are living in such a digitalized world that it is hard to find a job that doesn’t have things to do with technology. So I think being a bit tech-savvy can definitely land you many great positions in many different fields. And then there are skills that we know are crucial like communications and teamwork. They are required for most jobs since most jobs you don’t work in isolation so being a team player and an outspoken individual is something various corporations are looking for.

        • pop into one’s mind: tự hiện ra trong đầu
        • tech-savvy (a) giỏi về/ yêu thích công nghệ
        • a team player (n) người có kỹ năng làm việc nhóm tốt
        • outspoken (a) thẳng thắn, sẵn sàng nói lên quan điểm
A A mix of hard and soft skills is essential for a good job.
R Both technical proficiency and interpersonal skills are needed.
E Being tech-savvy, communicative, and adaptable are key qualities.
C These skills help you tackle challenges and thrive in the workplace.

This includes being proficient with computers, analyzing data, and staying up-to-date with the latest software and tools relevant to your field. But it’s not just about hard skills. Soft skills are equally important. Employers look for people who can communicate effectively, work well in teams, and adapt to changing situations. Problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically are also highly valued, as they enable you to navigate complex challenges in the workplace.

        • being tech-savvy: giỏi công nghệ
        • navigate complex challenges: giải quyết những vấn đề khó

16. Do you think women should be able to do all the same jobs that men do?

A Women should have equal opportunities as men for all jobs.
R Experience, abilities, and knowledge should determine job suitability, not gender.
E Women with the same qualifications should receive equal pay and opportunities.
C However, some physically demanding jobs may be challenging for women.

Sample 1: I think it’s hard to give a blanket statement for this. In my opinion, if they have the same experience, abilities and knowledge then a man and a woman should get offered the same positions with equal pay. In short, they should have the same opportunities. However, I do think that there are jobs that women should not do if they don’t have to or want to. I’d say a lot of physically demanding jobs are quite challenging for women since many of them don’t have the strengths to do them like men, so I don’t think those are suitable for women

        • a blanket statement (n) một nhận định rất chung, rất khái quát
        • physically demanding job (n) công việc nặng nhọc, yêu cầu thể chất
A Women should be able to pursue any career path.
R Skills, passion, and determination, not gender, should define career choices.
E Women excel in traditionally male-dominated fields like surgery.
C Limiting women’s career options hinders innovation and diversity.

Sample 2: Absolutely, women should be able to pursue any career path. For instance, in the medical field, we’ve seen many women excel as surgeons, a role traditionally dominated by men. If someone has the skills, passion, and determination, gender shouldn’t be a barrier. It’s about creating equal opportunities for everyone to pursue their career aspirations. If society restricts women from certain jobs, it not only limits individual potential but also deprives industries of diverse talent and perspectives, which are crucial for innovation and progress

        • pursue any career path: theo đuổi bất kì ngành nghề nào
        • deprive somebody of something: lấy đi của ai cái gì

17. How has technology changed the way we work?”

A Technology has revolutionized workflows but also made us more dependent.
R It improves efficiency but can reduce creativity and independent thinking.
E AI is used in graphic design for quick renders, but it limits creative input.
C A balanced approach to technology is needed to maintain creativity.

Sample 1: Pretty much everything, I’d say. It really revolutionized workflows and the jobs that are offered. Most jobs now include the use of a computer program or app to make the process more efficient and more precise. But technology has made us a bit lazier than before too. With the invention of AI, the creativity level has dropped a bit since people are becoming too dependent on it. Take graphic designing as an example, people are using AI for quick renders and image modifications which is definitely quicker but it is also taking away some of the creative thinking in the job itself. Therefore, I think we should be aware and have a more balanced approach when integrating technology.

        • revolutionize (v) cách mạng hoá, thay đổi nhiều thứ
        • workflow (n) quy trình làm việc
        • render (n) quá trình kiến tạo một hình ảnh
        • image modification (n) chỉnh sửa hình ảnh
A Technology has made work more flexible and efficient.
R It allows easy access to information, emails, and virtual meetings.
E Smartphones help manage work and personal commitments effectively.
C Technology boosts productivity and keeps us connected anywhere.

Sample 2: Technology has really transformed our work life. For example, thanks to smartphones, we can now stay on top of emails, attend virtual meetings, and manage projects on the go. This flexibility helps us juggle work and personal commitments more effectively. Plus, the instant access to information means we can easily research, upskill, and network with professionals from all over. Overall, technology has made work more efficient, keeping us connected and productive no matter where we are.

        • juggle work and personal commitments: cân bằng công việc và cuộc sống cá nhân
