Fast Food Follies
About half of the young people in America are heavier than they should be. That’s because they eat the wrong food, or they eat too much or too often. Or all three!
American doctors keep warning about “overweight kids” and some things are changing, very slowly. However, a lot of habits are very hard to change. Fast food restaurants, for example, are as popular as ever, at all times of the day. Hot dogs, hamburgers and French fries are still the most popular things to eat. The problem is that they are high in calories and fat. Another problem is to encourage children and teenagers to eat their greens.
“I often come in for a burger after school,” says Billy, a teenager from San Francisco. “They are so tasty and cost only a dollar! We also come here because it’s a good place to sit and chat!
But eating too much is not the only reason why people get fat – drinking too much has the same effect. In summer, it’s so easy to drink too much. In America, people drink lots of soda pop, such as Colas and 7Up. The reason is simple. They are on sale everywhere: in shops, café… And compared to Europe, it’s very cheap. But each small soda contains spoonfuls of sugar. No wonder people get fat!
