Describe a place in a countryside/village that you visited

You should say:

• Where it is;
• When you visited this place;
• What you did there;

And how you feel about this place.

Vietnam, my homeland, is a country with abundant natural beauty, from beaches to forests and from waterfalls to vast and green paddy fields. But, in my humble opinion, the countryside of my country is even more beautiful, and today, I would like to talk about one such enjoyable countryside which I visited about a couple of years ago.

Anyway, visiting the countryside once in a while is one of my favourite things to do. So, when a couple of my friends told me that they were going to visit the beautiful countryside in the southern part of Vietnam, I became really excited. Our trip began around 8 am in the morning, and after riding the bus for about 4 hours, we finally arrived at our destination.

Needless to say, we were all taken aback by the sheer beauty of the landscape around us as the scenery just stretches off into the horizon, as far as our eyes could see, with miles and miles of rice fields shimmering in the heat haze. The paddy fields were divided into broad rectangular shapes, making them look like some beautifully decorated “green chamber”. The flapping sounds of the birds from the forest there invited us to watch them fly under the blue and beautiful sky. The serene and quiet nature of this beautiful countryside was so enjoyable that we didn’t really want to return back to our home in the city.

Anyway, I would surely go back to that place in future because this is where I could find my peace and serenity. Besides, I would go back to that beautiful countryside also because it would remind me again how we could live a very simple life and yet become very happy.

Describe a countryside that you have been to

(Introduction) Alright, It is a fact that we Vietnamese have a strong family culture. Therefore, every year when the Lunar New Year comes, we often go back to our family’s hometown as a way to pay tribute to our origin. My family also does this of course, and this Lunar New Year, we went back to my mother’s home village in Ben Tre, a province to the south of Saigon.

(Story) My mom’s childhood home is a simple and humble cottage in a distant Ben Tre village. The village itself is a farming one, with vast green fields. Every time I go there, I can always see farmers ploughing and planting crops for the spring-harvesting season. There are also hordes of buffaloes and cows just roaming the fields freely, grazing grass. It is a pretty peaceful and idyllic panorama that is therapeutic to look at when I am there. The village is a typical Vietnamese countryside village, with a large river cutting through it, countless bamboo trees, and fresh air.

(Opinion) When we first got there, the first thing we did was to clean the ancestral altar, so we could make a feast and light some incense to put on it. This is a ritual to pay our respect to our forefathers, and it is common throughout Asian countries. After that, we got to making the food for our family feast, and it was a fun experience. We got to spend quality time with each other, including my cousins, uncles, and aunts.
At the end of the day, I would say the trip back to my mom’s home province this year was quite enjoyable. Seeing rustic scenery is something therapeutic, and it gave me the needed break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The villages

1. Is there anything special about the villages in your country?

Well, of course I think that the villages in my country are special in their own way. Lots of villages have beautiful scenery that you can only enjoy when you’re away from the hustle and bustle of major cities. I know tons of people love to visit the farms in spring for the views. Plus, the local communities there usually have unique traditions and customs that you won’t see and experience in cities. For example, many villages have ancestry temples where the local villagers who have a place on the family tree worship their ancestors.

2. Why do people want to go to the countryside?

I think people want to go to the countryside so they can relax. In the city, everything is so fast-paced. Wherever you turn, there’s something going on. Plus, it’s super crowded. It’s very easy to get overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of urban areas. But in the countryside, there’s much more space. You can enjoy the natural scenery without bumping up against people or getting stuck in a crowded area. Life goes at a slower pace, which can be a nice change.

3. What do people usually do when going to a village?

I suppose that people are either visiting family or going to a tourist spot when they go to a village. Sometimes villages have unique scenery that you can’t find in major cities. So people might be travelling to see an ancient temple or some kind of natural wonder like a waterfall. But I think it’s more common for people to visit family or friends who live out in villages instead of the major hubs.

4. Do you think people will live in the village in the future?

I would say that more and more people are gravitating towards cities. There are usually more job opportunities there, especially if you want to work in fields like finance or technology. But villages are charming and more laid-back than cities. So I’m sure there will always be people who prefer living in villages. Some people just can’t adjust to the hustle and bustle of cities. They would rather live somewhere more relaxed.

5. Do you think everyone likes the countryside?

No, I don’t think everyone enjoys the countryside. I mean, there are a lot of people who really like rural areas because they’re much more relaxed and peaceful than cities. But on the other hand, some people need the busyness of a city in order to thrive. So they might hate being stuck out in the countryside. They might get bored with the slower pace of life. Plus, the countryside doesn't have as many opportunities as big cities. So that might be frustrating for some people as well.

The city and the countryside

1. What are the differences between the city and the countryside?

There are a few that I could name. First, cities are much more developed than the countryside. They got more amenities such as mega malls, movie theaters, restaurants, and more infrastructure like bridges, skyscrapers and so on. Secondly, there’s understandably more pollution in the cities because of personal vehicles while the environment in the countryside is much more pristine. Thirdly, life in the countryside is just slower, whereas city life can be pretty hectic

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in the countryside?

Well, on the one hand, the environment is cleaner in the countryside, so you are able to enjoy nature a lot better there. Also, life is slower there, and people have a greater sense of community than in the cities, so it’s easier to make friends there and be close with your neighbors. On the other hand, there are fewer job opportunities in the countryside, so living there will hurt your career prospects. There’s also the lack of entertainment and amenities, which is a big downside for young people.

3. What kind of people would like to stay in the countryside?

Well, old people tend to love living in the countryside. In old age, many people would move there for some peace and quiet, and to get away from city life. There are also some rich people who relocated to remote areas to build mansions and enjoy their life I guess. To them, the countryside feels like a peaceful retreat.

4. Do people go to the countryside to travel or to live?

Well, I’ve seen many who go to the countryside for sightseeing purposes, some even go there to try out local delicacies and seek new experiences. There are some who move there to live as I’ve said before, like old people in their retirement and rich people who want to have a retreat.

5. Do most people prefer to live in big cities or in the countryside?

I’d say it’s the former. Cities offer better job opportunities, which attracts many young people. They are also attractive because of the higher standard of living and the abundance of entertainment.

6. Do people in your country like to go hiking?

Hiking isn’t a popular sport in Vietnam although there are those who do it. Lots of old people (and some young people too I guess) love going to mountainous areas around Hanoi and climb to the top to enjoy the breathtaking view. I think this sport will become more popular in the future, as people are becoming increasingly health-conscious.
