IELTS Speaking Part 1 Small business

1. Do you know many small businesses where you live ?

- Yes, quite a few. There are plenty of family-run shops and local cafés around my neighborhood. I really admire how these small businesses create a sense of community and bring a personal touch that

  • big chains often lack.
  • family-run shop (phr): cửa hàng gia đình
  • create a sense of community (phr): tạo cảm giác gắn kết cộng đồng
  • big chains (phr): chuỗi cửa hàng lớn

2. Do you prefer buying things from big companies or small businesses ?

- I’d say small businesses. I love the fact that they often offer unique products and more personalized service. Plus, when you buy from them, you’re supporting local entrepreneurs, which feels more meaningful to me than just shopping at large corporations.

- I’d say big companies. They usually have better return policies and consistent product quality, which makes shopping more reliable. Small businesses are nice for unique items, but I feel more secure buying from brands that have a solid reputation.

  • unique products (phr): sản phẩm độc đáo
  • personalized service (phr): dịch vụ cá nhân hóa
  • support local entrepreneurs (phr): ủng hộ doanh nhân địa phương
  • better return policies (phr): chính sách đổi trả tốt hơn
  • consistent product quality (phr): chất lượng sản phẩm ổn định
  • have a solid reputation (phr): có danh tiếng vững chắc

3. Have you ever worked in small businesses ?

- Yes, I have. During university, I worked part-time at a boutique clothing store. It was a great experience because I learned how small businesses operate — from dealing with customers to managing inventory. That job really taught me the value of teamwork and flexibility.

  • boutique clothing store (phr): cửa hàng quần áo nhỏ, thời trang
  • manage inventory (phr): quản lý hàng tồn kho
  • flexibility (N): sự linh hoạt

4. Have you ever thought about starting your own business ?

- Yes, many times actually. I’ve always dreamed of opening a small book café where people can read, relax, and have a nice cup of coffee. But I also know that running a business requires a lot of time, effort, and financial stability, so maybe I’ll do it in the future when I’m more ready.

- Not really. I think running a business sounds exciting, but it also seems risky and stressful. I prefer having a stable job where I can focus on what I do best without worrying about finances or management. Maybe in the future, if I have more experience, I’ll reconsider.

  • book café: quán cà phê sách
  • run a business (phr): điều hành một doanh nghiệp
  • financial stability (phr): sự ổn định tài chính
  • risky (adj): đầy rủi ro
  • stable (adj): ổn định
  • reconsider (v): xem xét lại, cân nhắc lại

1. What do you think is the retirement age for men and women?

I would say that anyone between the ages of 60-75 can choose to retire. Around that time, people are ready to settle down, and they usually have the financial means to retire and live comfortably. I don’t think it changes too much if it’s a man or a woman retiring. Since we’ve come a long way in regards to gender equality, it’s normal for either a man or a woman to work all the way into their sixties.

---

2. What kinds of qualities do people need to run their own business?

I think people need to be intelligent, determined, resilient, and enthusiastic in order to run their own business. People need to be smart enough to assess their target market and design a business that is appropriate for their customers. Plus, they need to be determined and resilient because running a business comes with many challenges and ups and downs. Finally, people need to be enthusiastic in order to inspire their employees and come up with unique ideas.

---

3. Is it easy to establish and run a new business in your country?

The reality is harsh. To launch a new company is quite simple in my country since you only need some investment money and a license from the Ministry of Finance, however, managing and maintaining it on your own is a different story. There are a million things to do, it’s stressful as well as required a large sum of capital and manpower. As a result, the vast majority of start-ups in Vietnam failed each year as they struggled in competition against giant enterprises or the shortage of demands.
