Speaking Part 1 sample
1. How often do you use social media?
Band 6.0+: I use social media almost every day. I usually check it in the morning and before I go to bed. I like using it to chat with my friends, read some news, and sometimes watch funny videos when I have free time.
Band 8.0+ (Technique: Reason): I’m on social media daily, but I try to limit my screen time. It’s a double-edged sword—great for staying connected but also a major distraction.
| screen time | /ˈskriːn taɪm/ | n | thời gian sử dụng màn hình |
| double-edged sword | /ˌdʌbl edʒd sɔːd/ | idiom | con dao hai lưỡi |
2.What social media platforms do you use the most?
Band 6.0+: I mostly use Facebook and Instagram. I check Facebook to stay in touch with my friends and family, and I like Instagram because it has a lot of interesting photos and videos. I also follow some pages that post funny or useful content.
Band 8.0+: I’m most active on Instagram and LinkedIn. Instagram is great for creative content, while LinkedIn helps me with networking and career growth.
| be active on | /bi ˈæktɪv ɒn/ | v phr | hoạt động nhiều trên |
| networking | /ˈnetwɜːkɪŋ/ | n | xây dựng mối quan hệ |
| career growth | /kəˈrɪə ɡrəʊθ/ | n phr | phát triển sự nghiệp |
3.Do you think social media has a positive or negative impact?
Band 6.0+: It has both. It helps people stay connected but can also be addictive.
Band 8.0+ (Technique: Advantage): It’s a mixed bag. On one hand, it fosters communication and learning; on the other, it encourages comparison and misinformation.
| a mixed bag | /ə mɪkst bæɡ/ | idiom | có cả lợi và hại |
| foster communication | /ˈfɒstə(r) kəˌmjuːnɪˈkeɪʃn/ | v phr | thúc đẩy giao tiếp |
| misinformation | /ˌmɪsɪnfəˈmeɪʃn/ | n | thông tin sai lệch |
4. How has social media changed the way people communicate?
Band 6.0+: People text more and talk less in real life. It’s much easier to send a message or comment on a post than to meet someone and have a real conversation. I think this makes communication faster but not as close as before.
Band 8.0+: Conversations have become faster but less personal. Emojis and GIFs replace real emotions, making interactions less meaningful. In the past, people used to spend more time talking face-to-face, which helped build stronger connections. Now, most communication happens online, and although it’s convenient, it sometimes feels shallow or distant.
| emojis | /ɪˈməʊdʒiz/ | n | biểu tượng cảm xúc |
| meaningful interactions | /ˈmiːnɪŋfl ˌɪntərˈækʃnz/ | n phr | tương tác có ý nghĩa |
5. Do you think people spend too much time on social media?
Band 6.0+: Yes, many people scroll for hours instead of doing something productive. They check their phones all the time, even when they’re with friends or family, which I think is not a good habit.
Band 8.0+ (Technique: Reason): Definitely! Social media is designed to be addictive, and many people don’t realize how much time they waste on it. What starts as just five minutes of scrolling can easily turn into an hour. It’s affecting people’s focus, sleep, and even real-life relationships.
| scroll | /skrəʊl/ | v | lướt (mạng xã hội) |
| be designed to be addictive | /bi dɪˈzaɪnd tə bi əˈdɪktɪv/ | v phr | được thiết kế để gây nghiện |
6. Which social media websites do you use?
I’m a huge fan of social media in general, but most of my time is split between Facebook, Instagram and Youtube. I use Facebook to keep in touch with my friends and to keep up with news. Instagram is my creative outlet. I love uploading my photos there and browsing through my feed for inspiration. And finally, I use Youtube for entertainment mostly but also when I would like to learn something new, there’s probably a video there to help me out.
| a huge fan of | /ə hjuːdʒ fæn əv/ | idiom | rất thích, là fan lớn của |
| keep in touch with | /kiːp ɪn tʌtʃ wɪð/ | v phr | giữ liên lạc với |
| creative outlet | /kriˈeɪtɪv ˈaʊtlet/ | n phr | nơi/phương tiện để thể hiện sự sáng tạo |
7. How much time do you spend on social media sites? [Why/Why not?]
I’m ashamed to admit how much time I spend on social media. I probably spend more time than I should. But it has just become second nature to me, I think. Whenever I’m bored or have an idle moment it’s very simple to simply start flipping through my feeds in search of something without really paying much attention. It’s simple something to keep me busy, I guess.
| be ashamed to admit | /bi əˈʃeɪmd tuː ədˈmɪt/ | v phr | ngại phải thừa nhận |
| second nature | /ˌsekənd ˈneɪtʃə(r)/ | idiom | thói quen/bản năng thứ hai |
| idle moment | /ˈaɪdl ˈməʊmənt/ | n phr | khoảnh khắc rảnh rỗi |
8. What kind of information about yourself have you put on social media? [Why/Why not?]
I think like many of my generation you can get to know me pretty well from what I have shared on social media. I post about things that I like, places I eat at, attractions I’ve seen and so much more. I like to think that I keep my feeds well-curated though, it’s not just a random assortment of posts with no heads or tails.
| get to know someone pretty well | /ɡet tə nəʊ ˈsʌmwʌn ˈprɪti wel/ | v phr | hiểu khá rõ về ai đó |
| well-curated | /ˌwel ˈkjʊəreɪtɪd/ | adj | được chọn lọc/sắp xếp cẩn thận |
| a random assortment of posts | /ə ˈrændəm əˈsɔːtmənt əv pəʊsts/ | n phr | một mớ bài đăng lộn xộn, ngẫu nhiên |
9. Is there anything you don’t like about social media? [Why/Why not?]
I think social media has turned the idea of “knowledge is power” on its head. We now have access to the biggest pool of knowledge in history and yet people are in a constant battle over who is right and who isn’t and the spread of misinformation does not help much. That’s my biggest problem with social media I would say, just how easy it has become to deceive people.
| turn something on its head | /tɜːn ˈsʌmθɪŋ ɒn ɪts hed/ | idiom | làm thay đổi hoàn toàn điều gì đó |
| the spread of misinformation | /ðə spred əv ˌmɪsɪnfəˈmeɪʃn/ | n phr | sự lan truyền thông tin sai lệch |
| deceive people | /dɪˈsiːv ˈpiːpl/ | v phr | lừa dối/đánh lừa mọi người |
