Introduction

Last summer, my best friend and I went on a summer trip to Da Lat.

Story

Da Lat is well-known for its pleasant but unpredictable weather. However, we did not take this into consideration when planning our trip, so we booked a high-rope tour in advance. Unfortunately, when we arrived in Da Lat, it started raining consistently for 2 days, so we ended up having to cancel the tour.

Instead, since the weather didn’t allow us to stray too far from our homestay area, we decided to hire a motorbike to visit local coffee shops and restaurants nearby instead.   We enjoyed hanging with local shop owners as well.

Opinion

We came home with even prettier pictures than we imagined.

Candidate: I’d like to tell you about the time I 1 .................... around Spain, I can’t quite believe it but it was over a decade ago now. Two friends and I got very good-value rail passes and travelled around Spain for 2 ................. It was an unforgettable experience.

We started off in Madrid because that’s where we landed. We did some sightseeing – we especially loved the parks – and we ate and drank lots – our favourite thing was, of course, the delicious ham. We liked the nightlife in Madrid, too, not least eating out – it was a real experience. The locals don’t go out to dinner until really late, often as late as 3 .................. (I suppose because it’s so hot)! So if you turn up at a restaurant at what would be a normal time where we come from, the place is either closed or completely empty.

We then journeyed on to Santiago de Compostela in the north-west, which was fabulous, and my friend is really into 4 ................. so we had to visit the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in the north. The weather was dreadful while we were there so we didn’t get the 5 ................, but even so we enjoyed it. More people should visit that part of Spain.

Then we moved on to Barcelona, Madrid’s rival city. We fell in love with it. It’s so different to Madrid, more Bohemian in feel and more 6 ............... The Gaudí architecture is so wonderfully whacky, looking half the time like it’s fallen off the page of a fairy tale. We were quite sorry to leave Barcelona.

After that we saw Valencia, but not for long unfortunately, and then we went on to Granada. What a beautiful, beautiful place. There is 7 ......................... the Moorish palace, the Alhambra, lit up at night. The image has stayed with me.

We had wanted to visit Seville and the Extremadura region of the country, but we’d 8 ..................... by then so sadly we had to leave.

It was a memorable holiday because I was with two good friends experiencing all these amazing cities. I don’t think I could do it now, because travelling so much in a relatively short time is tiring, but we were young and carefree and so took it in our stride. It was the 9 .......................

Examiner: Why did you choose to go to Spain?

Candidate: Well, one of my friends spoke Spanish really well so it seemed the obvious choice. I don’t like going to a country without speaking any of the language. And my friend taught us both Spanish as we travelled round the country so 10 ................... we could order our food ourselves and talk to people, albeit not on any complex subjects.

Sample Speaking Part 2

Describe a journey that didn’t go as you had expected

You should say:

and explain how you felt about this journey.

Sample:

Last summer, my best friend and I went on a summer trip to Da Lat. Although the trip didn’t go as planned for the most part, it was still one of the most memorable trips I’ve ever been on.

Da Lat is well-known for its pleasant but unpredictable weather. It can be sunny and bright one minute then pouring rain the next. However, we did not take this into consideration when planning our trip, so we booked a high-rope tour in advance. Basically, on the tour, you get to experience physically demanding challenges and games such as ziplining, ladder climbing, bridge crossing,.. in the forest. Unfortunately, when we arrived in Da Lat, it started raining consistently for 2 days, so we ended up having to cancel the tour.

Instead, since the weather didn’t  allow. us to stray too far from our homestay area, we decided to hire a motorbike to visit local coffee shops and restaurants nearby instead. It turned out to be a fun experience, as we found some hidden gems with fantastic food and drinks and a really unique coquette style. We enjoyed hanging with local shop owners as well.

Overall, even though we missed out on the tour that we expected the most, my friend and I still managed to make the most of our trip and had the time of our life in a very beautiful city. We came home with even prettier pictures than we imagined.
 

Describe an important journey that was delayed

You should say:

Sample

(Introduction) About two years ago, I experienced a delay on a trip I had been longing for months. In detail, my close friends and I had planned to travel to Spain for four days as an escape from all our worries and see Barcelona players first-hand.

(Story) The place had been on our bucket list for a while, and gathering everyone for this trip was no easy task. After our graduation, each went separate ways with different occupations, so we rarely saw each other as frequently as we used to back in college. Luckily, despite the stacking deadlines and meetings, we managed to set out a mutually vacant week to spend some quality time together. Prior to the trip, we spent weeks on end building up the schedule, envisioning a one-in-a-lifetime journey with all the destinations and accommodation all planned out.

(Opinion) We arrived at the airport early on the morning of our departure, filled with excitement. Before taking off, my group eagerly talked about what we would do, where we would visit, and how we would make the most of every moment. Sadly, not long after, the airline quickly informed passengers that the flight would be delayed due to severe weather conditions. At first, we were optimistic and waited for a while, thinking the delay was just a minor setback. After a couple of hours, it was unfortunate that the whole flight was canceled. My friends showed visible discontent upon hearing the announcement, some just sat there filled with frustration while others thought over the possibility of booking another flight. But we all know then it would take at least months to reschedule and draw up another trip as such.

At the end of the day, it is understandable why the flight was canceled due to safety reasons, I couldn’t help but feel let down. We went home disheartened, and it was not until weeks later that a friend in the group started to salvage the situation by proposing another plan for our next trip. Later, we did manage to set out on a compensated holiday, and everything went smoothly.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample

1. Why do people like to take motorbikes?

Motorcycles are usually popular because they are considered one of the most practical and inexpensive means of transport. In densely populated countries like Vietnam, they help people to weave through the chaotic traffic, allowing commuters to travel to destinations significantly faster than other vehicles. Besides that, motorbikes are suitable for most middle-class households because of their diverse models and cost-efficiency.

2. What are the major issues of motorbikes?

Despite the benefits mentioned, this transportation is not without its drawbacks. Like many other vehicles, one of the most detrimental impacts attributable to motorbikes is air pollution. They contaminate the atmosphere with a sizeable amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions, even worsened by the sheer amount of these vehicles on the road. Furthermore, the approachable nature of this vehicle also makes it a great escape tool for reckless drivers and law offenders.

3. What are the causes of these issues?

The main cause of the toxic fumes comes from the very nature of traditional transportation as most gas-fueled vehicles release harmful emissions. Additionally, many operating motorbikes are poorly maintained with third-party parts and subpar engines that exacerbate the levels of harmful pollutants. As for criminal use, easy access to motorcycles allows inexperienced and unlicensed motorcyclists to conduct their misdemeanors. This state of misuse also reflects the ineffectiveness of law enforcement in managing traffic.

4. What do you think we should do to solve that environmental issue?

To address the environmental impact of motorcycles, one of the most effective approaches is for the public to switch to electric vehicles. These modes of transportation offer lower maintenance costs and utilize renewable energy, making them effective in mitigating the harmful effects of motorbikes on the environment. Governments should also allocate more funds to public transportation infrastructure to encourage eco-friendly commuting and reduce citizens’ dependence on private vehicles.

5. How do you think the transportation system will be in the future? What can be improved?

One can evidently see the rapid development of transportation in the near future. Currently, companies are investing more in advanced technologies like driverless vehicles with improved map systems, making everyone’s daily commute more convenient and enjoyable. And with the disadvantages mentioned above, chances are people will opt for electric means of transport, with more charging stations and government subsidies to support the change.
