IELTS Speaking Part 1 Childhood
Grow up
1. Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. It is located in the Northern region of our country. I spent not only my childhood but also my entire life here with my family.

2. Was it a good place to grow up as a child?
Of course, it has always been a remarkable place for me. Hanoi is considered as a beautiful place with few crimes and friendly neighborhoods. We also have the best facilities and top schools in Vietnam. Therefore, I believe it is a great place for parents to bring up their children and provide them with excellent education.
| remarkable | /rɪˈmɑːrkəbl/ | adj | đặc biệt, đáng chú ý |
| crime | /kraɪm/ | n | tội phạm |
| facilities | /fəˈsɪlətiz/ | n | những tiện nghi |

3. Where did you usually play?
During my childhood, there was only one playground in the neighborhood. It was within a 10-minute walking distance from my house. Stages in life
1. How do people remember each stage of their lives?
Sample 1 (Example + Advantage): Most people rely on tangible mementos to preserve their memories. For instance, scrolling through a digital photo gallery or keeping a physical diary allows one to revisit specific emotions from years ago. The primary advantage of this is that it prevents our most cherished memories from fading into obscurity as we grow older.
Sample 2 (Time + Cost): Some people prefer to commemorate life stages by investing in "experience-based" memories over time. While traveling to celebrate a milestone like a graduation can be quite costly, many believe the high price tag is a worthy investment because those unique experiences remain vivid in our minds.
| milestone | /ˈmaɪl.stəʊn/ | n | cột mốc quan trọng |
| cherished memories | /ˈtʃer.ɪʃt ˈmem.ər.iz/ | n. phr | những kỷ niệm được trân trọng |
| fade into obscurity | /feɪd ˈɪn.tuː əbˈskjʊə.rə.ti/ | v. phr | chìm vào quên lãng |
2. At what age do you think people are the happiest?
Sample 1 (Popularity + Advantage): Many argue that childhood is the peak of happiness because it is the most carefree period of life. This stage is widely popular in people's memories because the primary advantage is the total absence of professional stress, allowing for pure, unadulterated joy.
Sample 2 (Example + Time): I personally believe the golden age is the late twenties. To give you an example, at this stage, you have achieved some financial independence but still have the time and energy to explore the world before facing the catastrophic consequences of major life mistakes.
| golden age | /ˌɡəʊl.dən ˈeɪdʒ/ | n. phr | thời kỳ hoàng kim |
| pure, unadulterated joy | /pjʊər ˌʌn.əˈdʌl.tə.reɪ.tɪd dʒɔɪ/ | n. phr | niềm vui thuần khiết, trọn vẹn |
| catastrophic consequences | /ˌkæt.əˈstrɒf.ɪk ˈkɒn.sɪ.kwən.sɪz/ | n. phr | hậu quả thảm khốc |
| carefree period | /ˈkeə.friː ˈpɪə.ri.əd/ | n. phr | khoảng thời gian vô lo vô nghĩ |
3. Do you enjoy being the age you are now?
Sample 1 (Advantage + Time): Absolutely. One major benefit of my current age is the sense of limitless potential. I have a significant amount of time ahead of me to trial different career paths, using each experience as a stepping stone for the future.
Sample 2 (Example + Cost): Yes, I quite like it, though it requires being more fiscally responsible. For example, I now have the autonomy to make my own decisions, but I also have to save up for my own expenses rather than relying on my parents.
| stepping stone | /ˈstep.ɪŋ stəʊn/ | n. phr | bước đệm/Nấc thang (để tiến tới mục tiêu) |
| fiscally responsible | /ˈfɪs.kəl.i rɪˈspɒn.sə.bəl/ | adj. phr | có trách nhiệm về tài chính |
| rely on | /rɪˈlaɪ ɒn/ | phr. v | dựa dẫm vào/Phụ thuộc vào |
| save up | /seɪv ʌp/ | phr. v | tiết kiệm tiền (cho một mục đích cụ thể) |
4. What did you often do with your friends in your childhood?
Sample 1 (Example + Popularity): We were quite active and spent most of our afternoons outdoors. Specifically, we used to play traditional games in the local park. These activities were incredibly popular because they fostered a sense of camaraderie among us from a very young age.
Sample 2 (Time + Advantage): I spent a vast amount of time playing team sports with my neighbors. Looking back, the biggest advantage of those sessions was that they helped me build physical stamina and taught me how to work effectively within a group.
| foster a sense of camaraderie | /ˈfɒs.tər ə sens əv ˌkæm.əˈrɑː.dər.i/ | v. phr | nuôi dưỡng tinh thần đồng đội/tình bạn thân thiết |
| look back | /lʊk bæk/ | phr. v | nhìn lại (quá khứ) |
| stamina | /ˈstæm.ɪ.nə/ | n | sức bền/Khả năng chịu đựng |
5. Do you have any plans for the next five years?
Sample (Time + Advantage): In the next five years, I plan to dedicate more time to my career. The main advantage of this is that I hope to strike a work-life balance early on, ensuring that I don't burn out while pursuing my professional goals.
| strike a work-life balance | /straɪk ə wɜːk laɪf ˈbæl.əns/ | v. phr | thiết lập sự cân bằng giữa công việc và cuộc sống |
Childhood activities
1. What were your favourite activities when you were a child?
Sample 1 (Example + Advantage): I was a very active child, so my favorite pastime was definitely cycling around my neighborhood. For instance, I would spend every afternoon exploring the local park with my friends. The primary advantage of this was that it provided a sense of unrestricted freedom and kept me physically fit without it feeling like "exercise."
Sample 2 (Time + Popularity): I spent a vast amount of time building elaborate structures with LEGO blocks. This was immensely popular among children of my generation because it was a great outlet for creative expression and allowed us to build our own miniature worlds.
| unrestricted freedom | /ˌʌn.rɪˈstrɪk.tɪd ˈfriː.dəm/ | n. phr | sự tự do không giới hạn |
| creative expression | /kriˈeɪ.tɪv ɪkˈspreʃ.ən/ | n. phr | sự biểu đạt sáng tạo |
| miniature | /ˈmɪn.ə.tʃər/ | adj | nhỏ xíu, thu nhỏ |
2. Did you prefer to do activities alone or with a group of people when you were a child?
Sample 1 (Example + Advantage): I generally preferred group activities because I was quite a social butterfly. Specifically, we used to play team sports like football or hide-and-seek. The main benefit of this was that it fostered a sense of camaraderie and taught me the value of teamwork and healthy competition from a very young age.
Sample 2 (Popularity + Time): While playing in a group was widely popular, I also enjoyed my solitude occasionally. I would spend a few hours of my time reading adventure novels alone, which I found to be a fascinating way to escape into different realities through my imagination.
| social butterfly | /ˈsəʊ.ʃəl ˈbʌt.ə.flaɪ/ | idiom | người hướng ngoại, thích giao du |
| fostered a sense of camaraderie | /ˈfɒs.tərd ə sens əv ˌkæm.əˈrɑː.dər.i/ | v. phr | nuôi dưỡng tinh thần đồng đội/tình bạn thân thiết |
| solitude | /ˈsɒl.ɪ.tʃuːd/ | n | sự biệt lập, tĩnh mịch |
| fascinating | /ˈfæs.ən.eɪ.tɪŋ/ | adj | lôi cuốn, hấp dẫn |
| imagination | /ɪˌmædʒ.ɪˈneɪ.ʃən/ | n | sự tưởng tượng |
3. What did you enjoy doing as a child?
Sample 1 (Example + Advantage): I thoroughly enjoyed visiting my grandparents' farm during the summer. To give you an example, I loved helping them feed the animals and exploring the rolling hills. The major draw of these trips was the chance to experience the unspoiled beauty of the countryside, which was a sharp contrast to city life.
Sample 2 (Time + Cost): I enjoyed drawing and painting for hours at a time. Even though professional art supplies could be a bit costly, my parents always supported this hobby. I found it to be a very therapeutic activity that helped me stay calm and focused.
| rolling hills | /ˈrəʊ.lɪŋ hɪlz/ | n. phr | những ngọn đồi nhấp nhô |
| unspoiled beauty | /ʌnˈspɔɪld ˈbjuː.ti/ | n. phr | vẻ đẹp nguyên sơ |
| sharp contrast | /ʃɑːp ˈkɒn.trɑːst/ | n. phr | sự tương phản rõ rệt |
| therapeutic | /ˌθer.əˈpjuː.tɪk/ | adj | có tác dụng chữa lành/thư giãn |
4. Did you enjoy your childhood?
Sample 1 (Example + Advantage): Absolutely. I look back on those years as a truly carefree period. Specifically, I didn't have any professional or financial worries, which is the biggest advantage of being a child. Everything felt like a new adventure, and life was filled with pure, unadulterated joy.
Sample 2 (Popularity + Time): Yes, I had a very fulfilling childhood. It was a time when playing outdoors was still more popular than sitting in front of a screen. I feel lucky to have grown up in a simpler era where I could develop vivid memories of real-world interactions rather than digital ones.
| carefree period | /ˈkeə.friː ˈpɪə.ri.əd/ | n. phr | khoảng thời gian vô lo vô nghĩ |
| pure, unadulterated joy | /pjʊər ˌʌn.əˈdʌl.tə.reɪ.tɪd dʒɔɪ/ | n. phr | niềm vui thuần khiết, trọn vẹn |
| vivid memories | /ˈvɪv.ɪd ˈmem.ər.iz/ | n. phr | những kỷ niệm sống động/rõ nét |

Whenever it comes to my childhood, I always think of the good old days that I spent with the kids in my neighborhood. Today I am going to tell you about one of my most favorite childhood game, whose name is blind-man’s-buff and it is very popular with kids born in 1990s.
I loved the game so much that I played every afternoon after school with my next door friends. It helped me relax after a long day studying at school.
To be more specific, the game required at least three people and we usually tried to gather about nine or ten kids so as to have more fun. First we played scissors, paper, rock to choose one person who would be blindfolded and when that person was chosen, his/her eyes would be tied up so he/she couldn’t see anything then we formed a large circle around that person. The circle was not allowed to “break” under any circumstances. Everyone should run to make the circle move and make it more difficult for the blindfolded person to catch anyone. If the blindfolded kid could touch someone and say his/her name, the blindfolded kid would be free and the kid who was caught would be blindfolded this time.
I continued to play this game till I finished primary school. Though I got older, the game was not suitable for me but it was truly one of my most favorite childhood memories.

Honestly speaking, when someone asks me about a friend that I remember from childhood, the only person that I can recall vividly is Linh, who was my next door neighbor and also my classmate.
I really admire Linh for several reasons. Firstly, she was not only an excellent student but she was also very helpful. Despite being extremely intelligent, she spent more time than anyone of us in the class to study no matter it was a compulsory or an elective subject. She was very hard-working and she was among the students who had the most outstanding in-class performance. Moreover, she often gave me a tutorial if I had any difficulties in study. She also encouraged me a lot and even sends me her learning materials if I want to have further understanding of the lesson.
I and Linh also had a lot of fun together. We lived next to each other so we used to take turns to give each other a ride to school, played at each other’s home or went to the park together. We talked about many things in this world for example our interests, hobbies or even shared about our crush. Linh was also the only one with whom I could hang out with the consent of my parents. At that time, she was my soul sister, a person who I could rely on and trust.
Though it has been years since I last met her; however, we still keep in touch with each other and Linh is forever my best childhood friend!

Sample Answer
I’d like to tell you about my niece, An, who is an incredibly talented seven-year-old with a deep passion for drawing and painting.
I’ve known An since she was born, so I’ve had the joy of watching her grow up. It didn’t take long for me to notice that she was always drawn to colors. Nowadays, she picks up her brush or pencils almost every single day. Whether it's after school or on the weekends, you can usually find her in her little corner, immersed in her own world of art. She captures everything around her, from portraits of family members to vibrant landscapes of her school garden.
I strongly believe she loves painting because it is her favorite way to express herself. For a child who might struggle to put complex feelings into words, painting acts as a visual language. It’s truly amazing to see how she lets her imagination run wild on paper. Moreover, I think she finds a sense of calm in it; when she paints, she is completely focused, which really nurtures her creativity and patience. To me, seeing her passion is a reminder to always appreciate the small, beautiful details in life. She is, without a doubt, the most budding artist I know.

As a child, chess fascinated me because of its depth and complexity.
I remember being the smallest kid in my class and struggling to make friends. I didn’t feel confident in social interactions, so chess became my escape. There were countless different strategies to explore – opening moves, mid-game tactics, and endgame techniques. Each game was a challenge that required careful planning, foresight, and flexibility to anticipate my opponent’s moves.
Playing chess also introduced me to my very good friend Luân. When I first started, I would lose most games. That’s when my friend Alex came into the picture. We became fast friends through our shared interest in chess, and he was always up for a game. What really helped me improve was how competitive Luân was. Every time we played, he would push me to think deeper, anticipate his moves, and stay calm under pressure. Even when I lost, he’d point out where I could have played differently or warned me about common mistakes. Over time, I started to see my game improve. His constant support and challenge made me more determined to get better. Playing with him became more than just a game – it was a way for learn, grow, and have fun while doing it.

Speaking Part 3
Child Artist
1. What are the differences between reading a book and visiting a museum?
| Answer | Books provide cognitive stimulation, while museums offer sensory experiences. |
| Reason | Reading requires active imagination; museums provide visual and spatial immersion. |
| Example | Reading a historical novel vs. walking through a gallery of ancient artifacts. |
| Consequence | Both are educational, but they engage different aspects of our intellect and emotions. |
While both are vital for personal development, reading a book and visiting a museum offer distinct types of engagement. Reading is primarily a cognitive endeavor that relies on one's ability to construct worlds through language and imagination. In contrast, a museum provides a visceral, sensory experience, allowing visitors to interact with artifacts in a physical space. For instance, reading a historical novel offers deep insights into a character's psychology, whereas viewing authentic artifacts in a museum provides a tangible connection to the past. Ultimately, both enrich the mind, but through fundamentally different modes of perception.
| modes of perception | /məʊdz əv pəˈsepʃn/ | n. phr | các phương thức nhận thức |
2. How do artworks inspire people?
| Answer | Artworks trigger emotional responses and challenge perspectives. |
| Reason | They act as a medium for conveying complex human experiences. |
| Example | An evocative painting can spark creativity or empathy in the viewer. |
| Consequence | This process encourages self-reflection and fosters a deeper understanding of humanity. |
Artworks serve as a powerful catalyst for inspiration by translating complex human experiences into visual form, which often resonates on a profound level. When individuals engage with art, they are frequently forced to step outside their own reality, which can provoke deep-seated emotions and challenge existing belief systems. An evocative painting, for example, can spark a viewer's dormant creativity or foster empathy by portraying the struggles of others. This interaction not only provides a brief escape from daily life but also fosters a culture of self-reflection and a broader appreciation for the human condition.
| catalyst | /ˈkætəlɪst/ | n | chất xúc tác |
| resonates on a profound level | /ˈrezəneɪts ɒn ə prəˈfaʊnd ˈlevl/ | v. phr | cộng hưởng ở mức độ sâu sắc |
3. Do you think galleries and museums should be free of charge?
| Answer | Ideally yes, though financial sustainability is a challenge. |
| Reason | Free access democratizes culture and promotes lifelong learning. |
| Example | Countries with state-funded museums often see higher public engagement. |
| Consequence | Promoting accessibility ensures that art is not an exclusive luxury for the elite. |
I firmly believe that public galleries and museums should, ideally, be free of charge to democratize access to culture. When cost is not a barrier, individuals from all socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to engage with heritage and educational resources. For example, in many nations where museums are state-funded, there is a significantly higher rate of public participation in cultural life. While I acknowledge that these institutions face daunting operational costs, I argue that the societal benefits of fostering a more educated and culturally enriched population far outweigh the need for revenue generation through entrance fees.
| democratize | /dɪˈmɒkrətaɪz/ | v | bình dân hóa/dân chủ hóa (tạo điều kiện cho mọi người) |
| socioeconomic backgrounds | /ˌsəʊsiəʊˌekəˈnɒmɪk ˈbækɡraʊndz/ | n. phr | hoàn cảnh kinh tế - xã hội |
| daunting operational costs | /ˈdɔːntɪŋ ˌɒpəˈreɪʃənl kɒsts/ | n. phr | chi phí vận hành khổng lồ |
| revenue generation | /ˈrevənjuː ˌdʒenəˈreɪʃn/ | n. phr | việc tạo ra doanh thu |
4. Why do some people visit galleries or museums instead of viewing artworks online?
| Answer | The physical presence of art offers an irreplaceable experience. |
| Reason | Online platforms lack the scale, texture, and atmosphere of the original. |
| Example | Standing before a life-sized masterpiece allows for nuanced observation. |
| Consequence | A visit is an immersive ritual that digital viewing cannot replicate. |
While digital archives are incredibly convenient, they cannot fully replicate the aura of being in the presence of an original masterpiece. Visiting a museum is an immersive ritual that allows one to appreciate the scale, texture, and intricate details that are often lost on a screen. Standing directly before a massive, life-sized painting, for example, allows for a nuanced observation that evokes a much stronger emotional response. Consequently, for those who truly value the sanctity and atmosphere of an artistic space, a physical visit remains an unmatched experience.
| aura | /ˈɔːrə/ | n | hào quang/cảm giác đặc biệt |
| immersive ritual | /ɪˈmɜːsɪv ˈrɪtʃuəl/ | n. phr | trải nghiệm nhập tâm/nghi thức mang tính đắm chìm |
| nuanced observation | /ˈnjuːɑːnst ˌɒbzəˈveɪʃn/ | n. phr | sự quan sát tinh tế |
| sanctity | /ˈsæŋktəti/ | n | sự linh thiêng |
5. Why do most children draw more often than adults?
| Answer | Drawing is a natural, uninhibited mode of self-expression for children. |
| Reason | Adults often prioritize utility and fear making mistakes. |
| Example | Children draw to make sense of the world, while adults focus on efficiency. |
| Consequence | As people age, they often lose the creative freedom they once possessed. |
Drawing is essentially a natural, uninhibited mode of self-expression for children, who use it to make sense of the world around them without the pressure of perfection. In contrast, adults are often conditioned to prioritize utility and efficiency, leading to a fear of making mistakes or being judged for their artistic output. While a child might draw purely for the joy of creation, an adult may avoid the same task if they lack 'artistic talent'. Unfortunately, this shift often results in a loss of the creative spontaneity that is so fundamental to childhood development.
| uninhibited | /ˌʌnɪnˈhɪbɪtɪd/ | adj | không bị gò bó/tự nhiên |
| conditioned | /kənˈdɪʃnd/ | adj | bị ảnh hưởng/hình thành thói quen |
| utility | /juːˈtɪləti/ | n | tính hữu dụng |
| creative spontaneity | /kriˈeɪtɪv ˌspɒntəˈneɪəti/ | n. phr | sự ngẫu hứng trong sáng tạo |
6. What is the right age for a child to learn drawing?
| Answer | There is no 'right' age, but early exposure is beneficial. |
| Reason | Fine motor skills develop over time, but creative play is timeless. |
| Example | Toddlers use scribbling to explore; older children use techniques to describe ideas. |
| Consequence | Focus on encouragement rather than technical proficiency. |
I would argue that there is no single 'right' age to start, as creativity should be viewed as a continuous developmental process. While formal training requires a certain level of fine motor coordination, the act of drawing can begin as soon as a child can hold a tool. Rather than focusing on reaching a specific milestone, parents should foster an environment where exploratory play is encouraged.
