1. Do you have any hobbies or interests? [What are they?]

Answer: Yes, I have a number of hobbies, and I enjoy doing them depending on my mood and time. These hobbies include watching movies, reading storybooks, playing badminton and going to fishing on a bright sunny day.

2. How did you become interested in (whatever hobby/ interest the candidate mentions)?

Answer: I became interested in reading storybooks since the day my high school gave me a “storyteller” as an award for writing the best essay. My mother first introduced me to the idea of watching movies in order to keep me busy when she needed to finish some important house works. I became interested in fishing after watching some really interesting documentary on fishing on national geography TV channel a while ago. As for badminton, I became interested in it when one of my uncles gave me one badminton racket as a “gift” before some years.

3. What is there to do in your free time in your hometown/village?

Answer: I live in a very lively and vibrant town where one can do plenty of things to enjoy his or her free time. It has a few top class movie theatres where people can always watch the latest movies. If somebody is into enjoying a boat ride, he/she can always do so at a big lake in our hometown. Besides, there are a couple of large shopping malls where one can enjoy shopping for the whole day. Finally, one can also visit a number of restaurants that offer some great dishes at a really affordable price.

4. How do you usually spend your holidays?

Answer: It depends on what time of the year we are talking about. If it is during the summer, I spend most of my holiday times by hanging out with my friends at my favourite café or restaurants, fishing or swimming at a lake, or playing badminton. If it is during the winter time, I spend my holidays mostly indoor either by watching movies or reading books.

5. What new hobby you would like to take up in the future?

Answer: In future, I would like to choose “gardening” as my new hobby as it would allow me to make the empty space in front of my house look more beautiful. Besides, it would also allow me the opportunity to get closer to Mother Nature without having to go outside of my house.

6. Is there any hobby now that you want to drop?

Answer: Actually there is one. You see, I play a lot of online video games whenever I have free time, and the games I play are often strategically challenging. I often get enraged when I lose, or when things don't get my way. So I'm trying to reduce the time I spend on that game, so I can improve my anger management.

1. Is fishing popular in your country? 

Band 6.0+: Yes, fishing is quite popular in my country, especially in coastal areas and rural regions. Many people fish for a living, while others do it as a hobby to relax during the weekend. There are also some fishing tours where tourists can experience fishing in rivers, lakes, or even at sea.

Band 8.0+: Sample 1: Yes, in Vietnam, fishing is a popular recreational activity enjoyed by many. It’s not only a means of relaxation but also a way to connect with nature and unwind from the stresses of daily life. With abundant lakes, rivers, and coastlines, both seasoned anglers and beginners have ample opportunities to indulge in their passion for fishing, casting their lines into the rich waters and reeling in the rewards of their patience.

Sample 2: Absolutely, fishing is quite popular in my country, especially in rural areas and coastal regions. Many people enjoy it as a recreational activity, and for some, it’s also a way to earn a living. 

2. Do you like eating fish?

Band 6.0+"Yes, I do. Fish is delicious and healthy because it is rich in protein and omega-3. I especially love grilled fish and fish soup. However, I don’t like fish with too many bones because it’s hard to eat.

Band 8.0+ (Technique: Advantage):  Personally, I’m not particularly fond of eating fish, even though I fully recognize its health benefits, given its richness in protein and essential nutrients. Sometimes, the pungent odor associated with fish can be quite off-putting for me. That, coupled with the meticulous task of deboning during meal preparation, greatly diminishes my love for fish dishes. At the moment, I think I’ll just stick to the good old steak.

3. Have you ever been to a place where there are lots of fish around you? 

Band 6.0+: Yes, I have. I once visited an aquarium, where I saw many kinds of fish swimming around me. It was really exciting to see colorful fish, sharks, and even stingrays up close. I have also been to a fish market, where there were many fresh fish for sale.

Band 8.0+: Yes, I’ve had the opportunity to visit places where fish abound. One memorable experience was when I visited a coastal village known for its thriving fishing community. The sight of countless boats bobbing in the harbor and the hustle and bustle of fishermen unloading their catches left a lasting impression on me. Moreover, strolling through the local fish markets offered a fascinating glimpse into the diversity of marine life in the region. 

4. Have you seen any movies with lots of fish? 

Band 6.0+: Yes, I have. One of my favorite movies is Finding Nemo, an animated film about a small clownfish who gets lost in the ocean. The movie has many beautiful underwater scenes with different types of fish. I also watched documentaries about marine life, which showed amazing fish species in the ocean.

Band 8.0+: Oh, absolutely! One movie that comes to mind is “Finding Nemo.”, a classic animated film featuring a colorful array of fish characters. The story follows the adventures of a clownfish named Nemo, who gets separated from his father and ends up in a dentist’s fish tank. Along the way, we meet all sorts of fascinating underwater creatures, from sea turtles to sharks. It’s a heartwarming and entertaining movie about family and friendship that’s been a perennial favorite of mine since I first watched it as a kid.  

5. Did you ever go fishing when you were a child? 

Band 6.0+: Yes, I did. When I was a child, I went fishing a few times with my father and grandfather. We used to go to a small river near my hometown, and I remember feeling very excited when I caught my first fish. However, I wasn’t very patient, so I didn’t go fishing often. It was still a fun and memorable experience for me.

Band 8.0+: I don’t know if this counts, but I used to tag along with my dad when he went fishing when I was a kid. It was always an exciting experience for me, as I enjoyed the calmness of the water and the thrill whenever my dad caught a fish. 

6. Do you like fishing? 

Band 6.0+: To be honest, I don’t really like fishing because it requires a lot of patience, and I find it a bit boring. I prefer active outdoor activities like cycling or jogging. However, I do enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of fishing spots, especially near lakes or rivers. Sometimes, I just sit and relax while watching others fish.

Band 8.0+: I wouldn’t say I’m a big fan, to be frank, but I do enjoy fishing once in a while. It’s a peaceful activity that allows me to relax and connect with nature.
