Bài học hôm nay chúng ta cùng tìm hiểu về sự hòa hợp chủ ngữ - động từ trong SAT. Nền tảng kiến thức cơ bản này bạn cần hiểu rõ để sử dụng và tránh lỗi sai, làm bài đúng nhé.

Singular and Plual Subjects

Singular subject:  chủ ngữ số ít -> đi với động từ số ít

Plural subject: chủ ngữ số nhiều -> đi với động từ số nhiều

Singular subject: Là chủ ngữ chỉ một người, một vật, một ý tưởng, một hiện tượng.

Ví dụ:

The student studies hard. (student = 1 người, chia số ít)

My friend likes math. (friend = 1 người chia số ít)

The book is interesting. (book = 1 vật chia số ít)

Plural subject: Là chủ ngữ chỉ nhiều hơn một người/vật/ý tưởng.

Ví dụ:

The students study hard.

My friends like math.

The books are interesting.

Quy tắc chung 

Example:  

  • She runs every morning. 
  • Her parents run every morning. 

Note:

  • S số ít + V số ít (typically ending in -s or -es in present tense)​
  • S số nhiều + V số nhiều (without -s or -es)​

Tricky singular & plural

Example: 

Everyone looks happy. 

Neither of the twins is sick. 

Note: 

S (Chủ ngữ số ít gây nhầm lẫn) + V số ít​

(neither (of), either (of), everyone, everything, someone, somebody, anybody, each, no one, nothing, anyone, anything …)​

Example: 

The data from the computer are on my disc 

Note: 

S (Danh từ số nhiều gây nhầm lẫn) + V số nhiều​ 

(data, phenomena, media, criteria,…)​

Các cấu trúc khác cần chú ý

THERE + BE 

Example:  

There is a cat in the house. 

There are ten cats in the garage. 

 Note: 

N số nhiều => There are​

N số ít/không đếm được => There is​

EITHER/OR AND NEITHER/NOR 

Either John or Mary is right 

Neither John nor the Parkers are wrong 

Note: 

Either A or B => B determines the verb​

Neither A nor B => B determines the verb ​

SAT Fighter’s tips 

Preposition  

Any word (in, at, of, for, to, over, among, between, under,….) that indicates a relationship between a noun and another part of the sentence 

Prepositional phrase 

Any phrase (in the house, at the mall, to the store, under the table,…) that begins with a preposition and ends before the verb 

 

Interrupter   

Any detail positioned between two commas 

Loại bỏ các cụm giới từ trong câu để dễ dàng xác định chủ ngữ hơn vì chủ ngữ sẽ không nằm trong cụm giới từ.​

Loại bỏ các "interrupters" để dễ dàng tìm ra chủ ngữ vì chủ ngữ không nằm trong phần chen giữa này.​
