Khác với các bài thi như IELTS hay Cambridge thông thường khác, Punctuation - Dấu câu là chủ điểm ngữ pháp quan trọng trong đề thi SAT bởi nó liên quan mật thiết trong đề thi. Người học cần nắm vững cách dùng dấu câu, dùng sao cho đúng để tránh mất điểm đáng tiếc theo các câu hỏi Verbal. Đặc biệt là phần Standard English Conventions, hỏi về quy ước ngữ pháp.

Dấu câu sử dụng trong đề thi quan trọng nhất là dấu phẩy, dấu chấm phẩy, dấu hai chấm. Khác với sử dụng dấu câu tiếng Việt, dấu câu tiếng Anh sẽ có quy tắc riêng, bắt đầu tìm hiểu nhé. 

3 dấu câu quan trọng trong SAT

Comma - Dấu phẩy

Dấu phẩy được sử dụng trong các trường hợp sau: 

Usage 1:  Tách các phần tử trong một danh sách​

She bought apples, oranges, and bananas. 

Usage 2:  Sau các từ hoặc cụm từ mở đầu câu​

After the meeting, we went out for lunch.. 

Usage 3:  Trước các liên từ (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) khi nối hai mệnh đề độc lập​

I wanted to go for a walk, but it started raining. 

Usage 4:  Đặt dấu phẩy để tách các mệnh đề phụ thuộc ra khỏi mệnh đề chính​

When the bell rang, the students rushed out of the classroom. 

Usage 5:  Sử dụng để thêm thông tin bổ sung vào câu​

My brother, who lives in New York, is coming to visit. 

Tip:  Không sử dụng dấu phẩy để nối hai mệnh đề độc lập mà không có liên từ. Đây gọi là "comma splice" và nên tránh.​

Semicolon - Dấu chấm phẩy 

Dấu chấm phẩy được sử dụng để: 

Usage 1:  Nối hai mệnh đề độc lập có liên quan mà không dùng liên từ​

I wanted to sleep; however, I had to finish my homework. 

Usage 2:  Tách các phần tử trong một danh sách phức tạp (nếu trong phần tử đó có dấu phẩy)​

The meeting was attended by Jane, the CEO; Mike, the CFO; and Tom, the CTO. 

Usage 3:  Trước các từ liên kết (however, therefore, moreover, nevertheless, etc.) khi nối hai mệnh đề độc lập​

She loves reading; however, she doesn’t have much time for it. 

Colon - Dấu hai chấm

Dấu hai chấm được sử dụng để: 

Usage 1:  Giới thiệu một danh sách, một ví dụ hoặc một lời giải thích​

You need the following items: pen, notebook, and calculator. 

Usage 2:  Giới thiệu một câu giải thích hoặc bổ sung ý nghĩa cho câu trước​

He had only one hobby: playing the guitar. 

Usage 3:  Nhấn mạnh hoặc giới thiệu một ý tưởng quan trọng​

There is one thing she feared the most: failure.
